Boosted stock bottom end?
the original question was how to the stock ring gaps deal with added heat from boost applications. common sense says they if too small from factory they will butt up and destroy ring lands. since no one seems to know im still searching
i see that, TONS of people have done. im just wondering how. maybe im just over thinking it, but when i helped my friend build his turbo 4.6 the ring gaps were twice the recommended specs for NA. so either the factory has set rather large gaps, or the boost limit on the rods is what the limiting factor is since only so much boost equals only so much heat. but some people are running 12 PSI which is almost a full atmosphere again so wouldnt that equal twice as much heat? needing a larger ring gap?
why are you trying to diagnose a problem that doesn't exist? is the real question.
yes the rods are the weak link in our stock motors. with nothing more than upgraded rods we can do 300whp, even 350whp and the stock pistons/rings hold up just fine. beyond that you need stronger parts, but at that point you're breaking a LOT more than just the stock pistons and need a whole lot more money for all other required supporting mods.
keep in mind the "original" b6t which the bp is a larger version of, was designed to work with a turbo.

no need to know, the BP is a boost motor from the word go. mazda designed it for boost and N/a was a 2nd thought.
end of story
same thing the 1.6 was their prior rally motor, till one of there drivers pushed them for bigger displacement and they built the BP, which is literally a stretched B6
