Default Motor and driveline movement...

So some of you guys know I bought my kid's turbo project back in September/October, and BrainEACK has been helping me tune it. It's a 1990 chassis, with the 1.6, MS1 PNP, Flyin' Miata kit (2560R Turbo/cooler combo) and the car is on Bilstein coil overs and has the Flyin' miata Frogarms on it. The motor and trans are moving under acceleration, and I can see the hood being pushed up as the motor moves...

SO, under visual inspection I don't "See" a torn motor mount. But I figure they're beat up pretty good. What are you guys using for motor mount replacements? And while I'm at it, are you guys upgrading the trans/diff mount as well?

Mazda competition motor mounts. Part number NAY1-39-040 I believe. Available at most online miata vendors. Cheapest I found is through Rosenthal Mazda, which is also located in Virginia.

There really isn't a trans mount. It's bolted to the PPF which runs back to the diff. The diff is mounted with two big bushings on each side of it. The entire drive line comes down to the two motor mounts and the two diff mounts.

Swap those out for fresh rubber or poly and your sure to see a big difference. I can't believe the motor is hitting the hood but if you've got that kind of movement your loosing power to it and should feel that come back as well.

The motor mounts are also covered in a metal cup, you can visually inspect anything without removing them.

Check your power plant frame too, mine broke right at the diff a while back.

What was the cause of that? Wheel hop?

Wheel hop, hard downshifts, FM level II clutch, I'm a abusive driver, the bolts at the diff may have been over torqued, worn out motor or diff mounts, I really don't know the cause of the failure. A broke PPF will allow for a huge amount of movement in the drivetrain.

For a street car, either replace them with stock or check these out:
MAZDASPEED MOTORSPORTS Miata Suspension Bushings

Factory Competition Engine Mounts NAY1-39-040
Factory Competition Differential Housing Mounts NAY1-28-890

Be aware that there are 3 different factory engine mounts: Standard, 04-05 Mazdaspeed and MazdaComp. Part numbers can be found on the Rosenthal/Arlington/Finishline Mazda website and there are several threads on here somewhere about them.

MMR makes solid delrin mounts, and they should be avoided.

Edit: I'm running the comps on my diff, I'd not hesitate to recommend them. I've got the comp engine mounts in the garage but I've been lazy about getting them installed.

I'm not driving it hard, and have ordered the rear diff and motor mounts thru my account with Mazda. Thought it had expired thru their motorsport program from my specmiata days, but nope, still active... Thanks guys... Wasn't sure there was something better out there for forced induction.

Update, just installed the IM motorsports mounts in the diff over two days ago. Had to buy a small shop press to get the bushings pressed in. The bench top press I have wasn't large enough.

I'll tackle the motor mounts this weekend. Doesn't look to hard if you have a lift handy.

Well I ran into an issue on the 383 stroker project that caused me to have to stop for a few days on that one, so I took the time to go ahead and do the motor mounts. 1.5 hours later, they're in. Passenger side was cake. Driver's side was a bit tight.

Gotta get the NB shock mounts and some injectors and I'll be done with this little project car. It may be going on the market come spring.

Not so much "bored" as "I've got a lot of cars". I typically rescue other peoples projects and then turn them around at some point down the road. We may keep it, hard to say, but selling it frees up some space and puts cash back in my track-day fund for the other cars.

By the way, I never got those mounts I originally ordered thru Mazda motorsports. They sent confirmation, and then I never got them delivered. So I cancelled and got the IMs thru Good-Win.
