The WTF am I doing wrong (besides trying to weld) thread
FINALLY got my Everlast PowerPro 205 hooked up in my neighbor's basement, trying to weld his grill frame back together.
I'm having serious problems keeping the electrode from "disintegrating" back up the cup, and even broke one. I tried to just push through it to get some boogers down at least, but it's even melting to the cup.
Both with the gas lens that came with the torch, and a 3/32" I got in a kit, usually with the #4 cup (I broke the #7 lol). 3/32" and 1/16" tungstens both 2% lanthanated
And using 70S-2 filler (the right one for mild steel?) both 1/16" and 3/32"
Part of it I think was the shitty rusty mild steel from the old frame, I cleaned it pretty good on the outside but there's rust on the inside too, so I think when I get decent penetration I may be ruining the weld from that. But that still doesn't explain why the tungsten is getting fucked up. I'm pretty sure I used 2% lanthanated in my class and it never did anything like that.
This is at 50-70amps, barely enough heat to melt the 1/16" filler and I was putting holes in the metal.
It also looks like I don't have enough gas, but I was doing 3 seconds pre and post flow and using a LOT, like 50cfh. I thought I read like 15-20 would be enough (and probably would be if I was doing this right). But I never had to set up the gas in my class, it was all ready I just had to adjust the amperage and go.
But I never did anything this ugly in my class either:
What do you guys think?

Yeah that's what my friend told me to cheer me up. "Don't worry, everyone that answered you so quickly knew that was the problem for a reason."
After switching them I got a nice controllable arc. I went through a whole 3/32" tungsten on Saturday and I think I only had to regrind the one I used Sunday once. A huge time saver.

Getting better at this aluminum welding **** - sadly, not my in my necro-posting - just realized what I did - thought iwas on the last page of the "buying welder" thread. How the hell I got here I cannot say
