I need some new tires for my 99 miata with stock 15x6 wheels. I currently have old bridgestone RE11's on the car. I want the stickiest tire I can buy that will work on my stock wheels that will maximize traction under acceleration. I will be drag racing the car and driving it on the street. Don't care if tires are loud and only last 3k miles, that's fine. Grip is pretty much all that matters. That and they physically fit.

What should I buy?

Car has a RX7 clutch diff, RX7 aluminum housing, 99 1 piece axles right now.

I actually have a MSM diff and axles as a spare. So if I break this one, plan is to swap that diff in. Maybe I should buy as spare 1 piece since that's likely the first thing to break with my current setup. Are the 1 piece axles the same on either side?

While I loved my RE-01s, these aren't even in the same league as Mickey Thompsons for actual dragstrip use.


Remember that patsmx5 is a bit... different from the rest of us.

 

Plan is to buy some 6ULs and whatever tire works well on them for real track days. That will probably be spring of next year. For now I'll just be drag racing it till the season closes and putting more street miles on the car. So these will be the daily/drag race wheels and tires.

 

Please let us know how it goes on the radials and if/what you end up breaking. Always nice to get some feedback on where things start breaking at the strip. I'm hoping to make a few passes this winter myself.

 

I usually make 15-18 passes when I go. My other daily has 190 passes on it in less than 2 years... As a testament, my Outback has broken a engine, turbo, center diff, and now a rear diff.

Sounds like I should buy a spare 1 piece axle, maybe two. Are they the same part for either side?

And yeah I'll post how they work! I could get 1.90 60' with no LSD on RE11's when it was turbo and the RE11s were only about 3 years old. They're rock hard now so 2.01 is the best I got out of them WITH a LSD... With the SC I'm expecting to get some pretty sweet 60' times now! Or break something as you say.

 

I wonder what STR NCs and STS NAs pull on their ProSolo 60'...

The re71R is the softest street tire ever. I distribute Nitto NT05R "drag radial" and such, the Re71 is noticeably softer to the fingernail-durometer test.

 

Good to know. I too wonder what those cars pull for a 60'.

 

Just so you don't have to ask it a third time, yes the axles are same on both sides.
