i didn't find anyone specifically asking so hopefully this isn't a repeat

im planning for my first HPDE in about a month and was curious if I could just detach my wastegate and wire it open to avoid a lot of the reliability issues people have.

Setup is '00 with begi log and dp on old t25 at 15psi/ 240whp
coolant reroute and 2 row aluminum rad with plastic piece between mouth and rad and I'll be putting my plastic under tray on for the weekend
ebay ic and piping
no oil cooler or oil temp gauge

My main concerns were frying my oil and breaking studs. Also having more power than I need when I'm just trying to learn the track, spot flag stations, figure out when to brake, be a total track noob

would popping off the wastegate actuator arm and just wiring open the wastegate reduce my likelihood of breaking studs and or toasting my oil?
is there any damage to the turbo with a wastegate pinned open full time?
should I quit worrying so much and just drive the car?

You're better off just exercising proper restraint in you right foot.

absolutely.

 

Buy inconel studs now, so you are not worrying about them. Turn down boost to just the wastegate. Go slow and do what your instructor says. Relax your grip on the steering wheel, most new people tend to hold it with a death grip. Don't worry about oil temps, you will be fine.

 

Good synthetic oil (group 4/5 base, no Mobil1 "synthetic"), Inconel studs, wastegate boost.

 

Install an oil temp/pressure gauge if you're really worried about it?

 

I second the notion of just running wastegate boost. Usually when I go to the track, I just put a straight through barb in place of my boost controller. Though you need to make sure those cells are tuned pretty good too. Could become a problem if you never tuned for that situation (wastegate boost pressure).

 

I'm going to disagree with everyone. I ran my first track day with the wastegate disconnected. I still made a few PSI but was still learning to drive.

Make sure the wastegate doesn't contact anything though. An EFR wastegate left to flap around will eat a turbine wheel.

 

This is all I think about when I see "wastegate wired open"

 

The one time I took the wastegate actuator off (blew coupler hose off and wanted to avoid overspinning turbo on the drive home) I managed to lose the stupid little clip that holds it on the rod. Nothing good comes of doing this, just learn to exercise restraint on your foot.

Thanks everyone, I'll go with wastegate pressure only, I originally got it tuned at that before my ebc was installed.
went ahead and ordered some inconel studs, and will do an oil change before the event.
