Default Upgraded halfshafts?

I popped a inner CV joint when testing earlier this week. No signs of problems (noise, leaking etc) prior to its failure. I saw the same thing on our Aim/Jackson Racing 25hr car. Is this a common failure point on higher power cars? Should I just cycle em out once a year or is this a worth an upgrade at 300whp. I also wonder if keeping it as a weak link is a good idea. Possibly save trans/diff from bad shift? Thoughts?

They're wear items on raced cars like a lot of other parts originally meant for 100hp wine and cheesing. Avoid parts store axles at all costs, getting mazda only. At $420 per axle, they're expensive, but if you want them to last longer, the driveshaft shop axles are a good choice. I think "400hp" is a random figure though, as you never know what an axles sees through it's life time. Is that one drag launch on drag radials at 400hp? Or is that a 24h race at 400hp? For reference, I know one has happened with a Miata differential. I know with 99% certainty that the other has not.

Somewhere a year or two ago Bundy discussed this and said they were wear parts replaced on schedule with his car.

Given the cost of OEM I will explore the driveshaft shop version. Just not sure if I should have em built with OEM outers or the ford style that uses V8R 1/2" thick hubs. The V8R hubs look pretty appealing given the failures. OEM has it's own appeal due to availability of spare parts at track weekends in the event of unforseen failure.

With the cost of the dss axles and hubs you can get axles hubs, and a getrag mounting kit from v8r. Then you're a junk yard diff and locally made driveshaft more expensive, but you'll be worry free about breaking anything.

I don't need that much diff given my 300whp/200wtq level. It would be REALLY hard to give up my OS Gixen too!

Sorry to get off topic. I have an OSG lsd as well and absolutely love it! Any idea what power levels they are good up to?

That’s one of the questions I have. Will they last 2x or 3x vs stock?

Interesting and highly relevant thread to our situation, with our gearbox now the K-Miata kit with zf 5 speed our next point of failure is likely to be axles / diff etc. Or maybe my wallet

AEM water meth kit also just arrived so we are hoping to push 400 atw and whatever associated torque that might be (330-350 at a guess?)

Pro active parts replacement will start being a priority for us too, How does one go about acquiring a Mazda Motorsports account?

@curly, The Mazda axles at $150 each are a bargain! I got a membership. Just need to weigh that against the reliability of upgraded ones. Since the topic is not very common I suspect factory would be fine for me at my power levels. The most appealing part of the upgrade is the ability to run V8R hubs. I would welcome something more reliable there given the potential consequences of a failure there.

I would do the DSS axles. Pricey but not that pricey, honestly. $235 for remans which will probably have the same CV wear right out of the box is not a good option. Parts-store axles all have the same problems too. At ~$400/side the DSS stuff is not off the mark for an upgraded part. They should last indefinitely, since you're just wearing out the CVs. I didn't realize they made a 1-piece version, last I checked (years ago) they were only doing a weird welded 2-piece setup. I will add those to my site this week.

Same. Always have to add to cart and check availability so their system can churn through supercession numbers. The $147 price turns into $150 plus an $85 non-refundable core charge when you do that.

Good assessment of the situation. I’ll pursue that option and keep the stockers for spares.

I had had a complete mazdaspeed diff and axles. The Axles looked great with the innner tripod design. Should have solved the wear issue there. The trouble was the diff. The guys at OSG said it was a weaker design than the 1.8 version. I dumped the setup and never looked back. With upgraded DSS axles and my OSG that portion of the car should be quite reliable.

Overall this car has been dead nuts reliable. It was my first failure in over 20 track days of abuse. It’s will be interesting to see how long the trans lasts. I get silver fluid out of it when changing so I know it’s not long for the world.

For the record, if you're going to be road racing, inquire with DSS to get teh road race option with road race grease and vented boots. It's different then the regular setup. They aren't bulletproof either, but they're good. I've snapped one of the outer stubs in half, but I do make a lot more power then most.
