Hey all, I recently picked up a 94 1.8l engine that I was doing a refresh on until I tried to remove the timing gear, which was almost glued to the crank snout. I managed to remove the timing gear but the crank snout is a little gacked up. Is this okay to reuse provided I clean up the raised metal or should I look for a used crank. I'm a noob so if I'm being a dumb then let me know

By stoning do you mean a fine grit sandpaper or is there a different method?

 

Sandpaper or emory cloth. Go slow and continally check your fitment with the timing gear. Remember - you can always take off more, you can never take off less! Slight imperfections on the pulley mating surfaces are fine if they're minimal. Mating surfaces for seals and journals are where you have to worry about marring the surface.

Sandpaper will work if you use fine stuff, but I really meant a machinist's stone. A knife sharpening stone works in a pinch.

As stated, just take off the burr and no more.
