Default Noob Supercharger Build Blog

I recently bought an old BRP MP62 Supercharger kit, an intercooler, and a PC Pro off of another forum member on here, and I'm very excited that I started my build over the weekend.
So excited, in fact, that I mad a blog to share it with the world!
A little background on me, I am an Aerospace Engineer in his early 20's, and I have little to no previous wrenching experience. This is going to be an adventure.

Congrats man! Let me tell you it is addicting!!!!! I went down the same road as you just a few years ago. So much fun and now I am full out; borderline going built motor. I have the BRP MP62 kit track dog racing intercooler etc. You can see my build thread and results in different threads on here. Good luck and have fun!!!

Couple things I see....

Consider replacing that radiator, it looks very old from the pics!
Also are those ebay slim fans? If so they are not as good as the stock fans regarding airflow.

Good luck on your build!

Zazzy, welcome and nice blog. I'd really second Pat's recommendation on a new radiator. It won't bold up longer with that extra heat. Be careful which you buy though... many are going to be bit too tall to get under the intercooler pipes, research or ask questions when you're ready. The brp IC mounts differently than a trackDog, so what works for them may not work for you. That also includes the width of the radiator, sway bar Choice and fan choice. Unfortunately, they are usually all of the expensive ones.

Lastly, when you're ready for hood props, I'd go for the dual setup. The single hood lift looks simpler, but there's a common risk of one side lifting a bit even when it's closed. I'd recommend one you don't have to drill but connects with mounting points on the factory hinge. Ladtly, beware of using a 2x4 or dlsomething to hold the hood up in the meantime. As light as the hood is, is still got a few outward dings on the hood now.

I want to start by congratulating you on getting this far with an install and yet never having removed a wheel - just wow.

One question, the OPG you installed, does it have a 1/8"BSP thread in the engine block end? If, as most North American aftermarket OPG do, it came with 1/8"NPT thread then:

1) It would have gotten stiff pretty quick but taken for ever to get tight.
2) About half the installs of 1/8"NPT fittings that I have seen, fail due to over-stressing the brass fitting at install often with catastrophic consequences.

I know it's a bitch but I'd check and replace if necessary.

Just my 2c, YMMV.

I'm gonna 'third' that! Once the radiator get that color, they can be a bit if a ticking time bomb, and overheating an aluminum head on an iron block can happen incredibly fast.

A friend with a '96 NA warped a head after failing to heed my warnings to replace his yellowing radiator....Less than a month later he was looking at a complete engine swap. He said that his temp gauge was only above the middle for five seconds before he shut it down. I am not sure I believe it, but it would support how quickly these engines can fail when a major cooling malfunction occurs. With the radiator out, it is a great time to swap all the hoses as well with silicone replacements. It is a pain to do the bypass ones with everything in place.
