How to get more boost/power with my supercharger?

Serious thread....

I have a 1.6L W100AX, with a 2.59:1 pulley ratio. That puts the SC at 18,000 RPMs at 6,900 engine RPMs. The SC's max continuous RPMs is 18,000, 20,000 is the absolute max it's rated for. That's a 5.5" lower ATI SC pulley, and a 2.125" upper pulley, the smallest one Whipple sells.

It makes 28.8 PSI boost at 6,900, which is as high as I've rev'd it for reliability's sake. I could rev it to 7,700, that would put the SC spinning 20,000, and probably make 30-32 PSI boost.

Is there anything else I can do to get more boost? Or more power with the boost I already have?

you could get it professionally tuned on a load bearing dyno :)

TNTUBA 12-07-2015 11:38 PM

But seriously. I think you are running too much boost, possibly spinning the blower too hard.

David was making close to 400hp on basically your same setup on E85. With one fuel pump a 75mm throttle body, stock cams, off the shelf header...etc etc etc. And I think he was only spinning his 1600ax around 15,000 RPM at his 8,000 RPM redline.

I agree it needs to be tuned, I haven't touched the timing since I got it running right.

But curious why you think I'm running too much boost? I have a larger upper pulley I can run, but the car is slower everywhere with it installed and of course makes less boost. Or are you saying something is causing the high boost reading?

Yes mine and David's setups are very similar. He had a better header, I have better headwork (but stock cams) same size throttle, etc.

But I can say my timing map is similar to yours in boost. I'm assuming yours was tuned well.

Yours you posted in my fuel system thread: https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1448584592

Mine on the car now: http://i231.photobucket.com/albums/e...pste0x3zlh.png

Granted I'm on E85, not C16. I believe E85 has a slower burn rate, so thus would want more timing.

TNTUBA 12-07-2015 11:58 PM

Then I have no idea.

patsmx5 12-08-2015 12:04 AM

Mine trapped 93 mph in the 1/8 mile. Pretty sure you said your car was faster than that. Granted you're car is probably lighter than mine, but still.

My car ran in the low 7s in the 8th on 600lb rear springs, full aero, stiff worn out A6s and a terrible 2.2 second 60' time (tc was set up for non preped surfaces and bogged at the preped strip)

Made one pass and got asked to leave.

So yea. I've got no clue where to tell you to go from here.

Full_Tilt_Boogie 12-08-2015 01:06 AM

Add a turbo to the setup.

I think I remember the mph of that pass. Do you know about what the car weighed? My car is around 2,400lbs, and another 200 with me in it.

Take it to the dyno. Seriously, take it to the dyno and tune it there. There is oodles and oodles of power in getting the timing right, and the only way to do that is to do it on the dyno.

To answer your original question. Remove restrictions. Everywhere.

^The answer.

Another thing you mentioned the other day. Correct me if I'm wrong.

You said you were making like 36psi at the supercharger outlet, but the MAP was 28?

Something is totally screwy there.

That problem is fixed now.

But on the topic of restrictions. What is there to fix? I know a custom header with larger diameter primaries would help, and cams. I don't really know what else I could do besides those two things.

Tuning. Intake manifold?

This entire thread is based on your virtual dyno results. Something I've never been able to get within 50hp of my actual dyno readings.

I have a flat top intake manifold right now. Not sure what better options there are other than a custom one.

This thread is just based off of "what can I do to make more power/boost". How to improve what I got.

aidandj 12-08-2015 12:56 PM

I guess. Bigger blower?

Only better IM would be custom.

TNTUBA 12-08-2015 01:25 PM

See. That's the thing. You want to know how to get more power out of your setup...and you dont know how much power you are curretly making (other than a cell phone app) nor do you know how much power the current setup is capable of making.

Until you get the car properly tuned....everything else is just a total W.A.G.

All that money spent on turbos, superchargers, engine internals, your new Mercedes C63 that you've mentioned several times, and the hundred bucks for three pulls on a Dynojet breaks the bank?
