How often do you check the oil level in your SC ?
Had my SC seize a couple of weeks ago. No oil ! How often are you checking the oil level on your MP62 ?
The MP62 rebuilter is recommending checking it everytime engine oil is changed. If you haven't check the SC oil level in a while it might be a good idea to check it. |
I went 3 years, 8 track days, 25k miles before checking mine. Need to pull it out and put better grease on the screws after it's been sitting for a year and 1/2 now. I know track dog runs thier cars without ever opening the blower.

My last MP62 I went a couple of years and approximately 20 track days without an issue. Maybe as the units are starting to age we need to be more careful ?

They just want to sell rebuild kits.

Its hard to decide who to listen to on the maintenance. So many of the knowledge sources have a vested interest in their recommendation.

Every five years, whether it needs it or not.

I've run mine for 14 years without checking it. Maybe I should. But mine is the m45 with the upside down fill hole and that's my excuse

I have pulled several 25 year old M62s in the JY that still were full on fluid. One of those was in perfect shape and is on my car now. The oil does not really go anywhere but is a good idea to replace time to time.

Every 100k miles is a pretty good metric. Thats the OEM recommended span on M62 blower oil and coupler replacement, and that works fine on blowers that are givin it all they got too. No need to check the oil level, it should never drop.

Never sounds about right (at least for the M45)..... The only time I've seen it done is during the occasional rebuild when the coupler in the nose shaft fails.

I saw somewhere a picture about a modified oil-housing with cheap oillevel-meter. I will do it when I get my SC rebuild.

I came to Miatas from Minis. The M45 is on the 02-06 Mini S, and those are usually refilled/replaced with oil at the 100k mile range.

Checking sc oil
I'm a NOOB. I Just purchased an m45 kit for my 97 1.8. How do you check the sc oil level? I don't see any obvious answer. Do you have to dismantle the charger or nose pulley? I realize this is an old thread, but I can't be the only person trying to put a kit together

Never, I never have checked any of mine (3), they've never failed (yet)... If you want solid info about these, call Hector at RSpeed, he knows a lot about these units.

Checking the oil means pulling the blower, pulling the plug and measuring what comes out. They don't have a dip stick. If you're going to do that, might as well replace it with, you guessed it... A measured amount of oil.
Mileage/time? I think OE's using similar eaton products recomend 100k as stated above. If there are no leaks and street driven, that's probably fine. However I have seen leaks, and not alway external. With hard/track use, I'd recomend much more frequent changes (checks). 25k? If strictly track, at least once a season. By the way, never store a blower on end. It will leak. Always store it horizontal. And fill with the approved GM oil. The theory is that it becomes misty/airborne with the rotation of the blower. This allows it it reach the parts that are not submerged. Oils not designed to do this won't. Premature failure is likely. |
^ what he said... I will add that I have not driven any SC powered cars anywhere near 100K miles.
