Mp62 and TVS900 max speed

Hey y’all. I’ve been doing a lot of research on the mp62 and TVS900. I found a lot regarding max supercharger speed. Most numbers I saw online here and other sites stated the gen 4 mp62 speed limit was around 17,200 and the TVS900 was around 24000.

I called Jon Bond and talked with him. He said the Internet has a ton of incorrect information and the mp62 was only good for about 14200. Essentially a 65mm nose with a 130mm crank at 7200 rpms. He said going higher than the 14200 would make problems with the needle bearing as they are too short to provide adequate support and it’s a limitation of the case/rotor design.

This information about speed contradicts what many users here have stated and run.

I just got off the phone with Eaton. Eaton confirmed what Jon said. Eaton states the mp62 gen 4 is good to 14000 and the TVS900 is good to 19500.

Jon stated the confusion came from the gen 5 as used on the cobalts. They had longer rotors and needle bearings and a max speed closer 17xxx. He said many people took this number and incorrectly applied it to the gen 4s.

I called Magnuson and they said the mp62 gen 4 was good to 16000 but that whatever information Eaton supplies would be correct as the rotors and needle bearing are Eaton’s design. TDR states 17280. So much conflicting information https://forum.miata.net/vb/images/smilies/frown.gif

Hope this information helps some of y’all. If you have anything to add please do.

They stop making power long before they run out of rpm. The TVS are far better in that regard.

Agree. The Tvs is better. It’s moved less air per revolution but ultimate cfm output at max is around 100 cfm higher than an mp62. We just need the bracket. I am not sure if Tom’s big throttle body kit bolts on or not.

Don't spin a whipple to 20k and daily drive it, it will wear out quickly. That's my experience. 16K max RPM seemed to be the limit of reliability for me.

Why are you looking at th 62 and the 900? 900 is an upgrade from the 45, if you have room for a 62 you need the 1100.

You need to listen to what Jon tells you. He has forgotten more about blowers than most anyone else could hope to learn in a lifetime.

I’m looking at what is available that will work with existing hotside kits. The TVS900 will work fine. The larger Superchargers while I would love to have one I do not believe they will work nearly as easy as the Atvs900. The others are physically bigger. Entire new bracketry would need to be made and designed. If it’s easier than I’m thinking hen let me know as I agree simply using a TVS900 to upgrade. Mp62 doesn’t make sense. It does make sense though instead of over a $1000 for a rebuild to pay a little more for the tvs. And as for Jon, he seems like a good guy. I am sending some stuff to him this week.

Thanks yall. Happy Easter.
