problem with my super'd MX-5. High AFR

Helo, first time in here so im not sure if im posting in the right category, if im not, MOD please move thread.

So this is my problem, iw as out driving the other day and i suddenly noticed a severe loss of power when in boost, like it was running lean. very lean.

i checked my sparkplugs, and they where as white as a piece of paper.

so i checked my JR Powercard and it looked fine as it was intercepting the signal of the ecu and supplied more fuel. i do not have an AF gauge in my car but im getting one if i have to to fix this problem. anyone have any ideas of what to check first? i was not the one who did the wiring of the power and timing card, but they have worked fine until a few days ago. i have not been utilizing boost since this happened as im afraid i will burn a hole in my pistons.

my setup is as follows :

JR m45 SC @ 0,7 bar
TDR intercooler
65mm pulley
powercard
timingcard
KN air filter
walbro 255 fuel pump
stock inj.

Please help me as this is my daily driver and i could really use some good good pointers.

Regards

Tommi.

Sounds to me like its not getting enough fuel. A WBO2 would tell you exactly what's going on. You could richen up the power-card, but you still won't know what's going on because you don't have a WBO2, a gauge to read it, or something to datalog it. So basically you're guessing and you're probably going to burn-up the motor. Have fun.

ok well that had a nice tone to it... im gonna get a af gauge this weekend as everything is closed for the holidays...

urgaynknowit 12-27-2008 10:44 AM

dont hit boost without a gauge

SweetMX5 12-27-2008 10:48 AM

we used an external WBO2 sensor on it, the type that u stick in the exhaust and have a logger inside the car, which u can read it from. maybe i can borrow it again... but it has been fine earlier so i dont know why it happened now.

Not trying to be a pain but, seriously DITCH the powercard and the timing box and go with either MS or some other form of stand alone. In the long run I will promise you that you will never be able to get your car to run "just" right. I had nearly the exact same setup for almost 4 years and it was ALWAYS pissing and moaning.

I'm not saying you should ditch the blower (they are VERY fun) but look into some more reliable form of engine management. In the long run you will be more than happy that you did.

Good luck

im saving up for a Hydra Nemesis for engine management, but its quite expensive and i think i found the problem, there was no clamp at the "exit" of the AFM so it was drawing in excess air... i will check it out tomorrow. good night.

What year is your car? You could save alot of money by using megasquirt over the hydra and have just as much support from the guys on this forum as you would dealing with FM.

no clamp at the exit of the AFM? Excess air?

WUT

SweetMX5 12-28-2008 05:12 AM

yeah u know there is one inlet and one outlet on the AFM? the hose thats connected to the elbow from my supercharger and to the afm does not have a clamp om it so it will be drawing in air from there in addition to the air it takes in thru the afm.. im sorry im not so good at technical english .. soo im doing my best here :P

I really doubt thats the problem but it's best to have a clamp on it any way. The best thing to do is just do a complete run down of EVERY component of the blower assembly. I had to do this litteraly every time before a run at the autocross becuase I would always find something that was half off.
