'01 ABS on a '99?
Anyone know what it would take to install a '01 four circuit ABS with the electronic bias control to a '99? Is it even possible without swapping out the entire brake system?

Count the brakelines, the 01-05 is still a 3-channel system with only one line to the rear.
Read this: https://www.miataturbo.net/build-thr...into-nb-73579/ How much of the 99 harness you can keep and where to cut/splice you have to figure out for yourself. I have put this on hold, although I already have a 01 pump with pigtail on the shelf and a burned ABS ECU (for connector etc). Someday.... |
As Niklas says, it's still a 3-channel system. There's no Miata 4-channel system until the NC.
That said, if there were a 4-chnanel system that fit then putting it in wouldn't be much harder than the 3-channel. You'd just have to bend & flare a custom hard line for the driver rear, run it up to the ABS unit, and then delete the junction block and crossover line from the other side. --Ian |

I don't know if there are any selfcontained (not dependant on CAN) 4channel ABS units, and most probabably none with Miata-like calibration. NC would be closest I guess. If picking from another car, should it be heavier, lighter, other weight distribution? Preferably tuned for stickier tires (M3 CLS? Close to Bosch Motorsport money...). A very minor problem compared to splicing the harness IMO. :)

As for other ABS transplants, I've heard of people using BMW E46 systems as donors for other non-BMWs, but I dunno if it would work for a Miata. A lot of newer ABS systems are integrated with TC and ESP, which makes it more complicated to sort out. The 3-channel Miata system works pretty well, I don't know that it's worth trying to do a 4-channel one. --Ian |
