1.6 Flywheel in 1999-2000 model - Performance?
I'm considering puttingin a 1.6 flywheel and clutch assembly into my car. I've heard it will gain a more performance feel to it and possibly rev faster?
Is this true? Is it just as reliable for a naturally aspirated car? I'm planning on getting a turbo in the future, but thats aways off and my clutch is out, flywheel is burnt really bad, and theres a 1.6 for free on a local forum. |

The weight difference is not substantial, but in theory it would be comparable to lightening the 1.8 flywheel by a very small amount. I would not expect a significant performance increase.
On the other hand, do you want to do this again before you install a turbo? Clutch jobs are a pain in the ass. |
For a few years of barely noticeable performance, I wouldn't bother. Now if you installed a lightened 1.6 flywheel, that's another story, you might start to notice the difference, but you'll loose a lot of money once you swap back to a turbo capable 1.8 unit.
Just surface the 1.8 and put in a FM clutch. |

It works fine, the stock NA6 could handle enough power to run in a healthy N/A motor, but anything over like 140bhp with aggressive driving will probably nom it hard.

Go with the turbo(able) clutch/fly now. Why not if you have to do it, do it once. then pull the whole motor/trans together and add turbo kit, seals and gaskets. It's soo much easier that way.
No one wants to plan to do a clutch job again, soon. |
