20 tooth speedo gear source for 3.63 swap?

Planning on swapping a 3.63 R&P into my 95 with MSM 6spd trans in the next month or so. I've read up on what's needed to convert the speedo sensor to mechanical drive, but nobody seems to have the 20-tooth gear (M503-17-441) in stock anywhere.

Has anyone else had any luck finding this part or know of some top-secret stash I could snake my way into?

Try Jim Ellis Mazda

Unfortunately, I've given both of them a call already. It seems it's discontinued by Mazda and the Mazda parts network is out of stock. Not sure why it's still listed on all the Mazda dealership/part sites still

I got mine from Miataroadster.com

I could be wrong, but from what I've seen, he just stocks the OEM electronic senders. I'm looking for individual parts to build a mechanical sender for a 6-speed swap into an NA chassis.

Blkbrd69 07-23-2020 05:36 PM

Might want to drive it first.
I went from 3.9 to 3.63 and speed is actually closer to correct.

From what I'm aware, the only way to retain your speedometer after a 6spd swap into an NA chassis is by swapping a 5spd speedo sensor in (no longer have + was a 4.1 ratio) or building your own mechanical speedo sensor from these Mazda parts:

M503-17-441 (20 tooth gear, out of stock)
9958-60-8166
9922-20-214
1011-17-443
1011-17-442A

It's not just about changing the speedo sensor ratio since you have to convert to a mechanical sensor as well for the NA chassis. Thanks for the suggestions but, I'm just looking for any known location that M503-17-441 is in stock.

I have a 20T sensor, it has a white gear on it. PM me ill sell it to you.

Probably your best bet^^ A month or 2 ago I bought the last 19T and 20T gears that were in the Mazda North America system. Europe might have a few

Jumpster74 07-24-2020 01:58 PM

Damn, picked the wrong time to make the swap I guess. Andy's 20T gear was from an NB sender which is offset a little differently, even though they look similar. I'll take a look into international orders though, currently seeing if Maruha stocks any

Jumpster74 07-27-2020 05:32 AM

Well, it seems I'm unable to ethically ;) source any 19/20 tooth mechanical speedo gears from anywhere.

I believe the new solution for a 3.6 + 6spd + NA chassis swap is going to have to be a stock NA 5spd mechanical sender (4.1), then order a speed corrected gauge set from Adam at RevLimiter. Been looking for an excuse to add some interior bits anyways

jonboy 07-27-2020 06:18 AM

There's plenty of 6 speed NBs being broken in the UK / Europe where they are way more common - you should be able to get an electronic sender with the right gear on it from either some of the breakers or ebay etc

Try: https://www.autolinkmx5.com/speedo-d...th-10084-p.asp

Jumpster74 07-27-2020 06:31 AM

Thanks, but again the NB sender gear WILL NOT work with this specific swap configuration. That gear is a different part number with a different offset that won't mesh properly when using the other parts.

From all the research I've done, the only way to make this specific swap is to build a sender with the earlier listed part numbers which include a 3.6 sensor gear from a Mazda 929 from 30 years ago... Or just get new gauges

I went with the Adam@Revlimiter for a gauge cluster set that was corrected and it worked well. Adam sends out a speadsheet to fill out and then can make the gauge face off there.

Emailed him and will be getting on his order list for a set. Happy to keep the money in the miata community

Speaking of which, anyone have a spare 4.1 5spd sender sitting around? Sold my old one with the trans

When filling out the spread sheet he sends you. Put in as many data points as possible. I wish I would have done a bit more faster speed points.

Jumpster74 07-27-2020 08:24 AM

Noted. I will certainly test the upper limits for, err... data collection :D

If it helps, I.L.Motorsport in Germany sell a kit of parts for a 3.6 speedo drive: https://www.ilmotorsport.de/shop/art....php5?aid=5966
I've previously heard of people being told by Mazda some parts were discontinued but then later others had no issue with ordering the bits. Never got to the bottom of that.

Jumpster74 07-27-2020 04:15 PM

Wow, nice find! Looks like the exact kit I was trying to piece together.

Honestly, I've already convinced myself I want the revlimiter gauges since it will let me raise the gauges top speed, but that looks like a perfect option for anyone else wanting the swap. Props for finding that! Definitely odd about Mazdas stocking issue though
