6 speed locked....
Picked up my half drowned 6 speed but it appears to be mechanically locked.
Can't turn either the input shaft or the drive shaft (by hand) it rocks and it sounds like it is mechanically hitting somthing. I notice 2 sets of wires coming out one must be the reverse switch, the other wouldn't be a mechanical lock out or something would it? Certainly what it feels like (gearbox IS in neutral best i can tell.....) Just clutching at straws, I am not keen to pull it apart if I can help it.... |
one is a neutral switch, the other is a reverse switch
Get a driveshaft and see if you can turn the output with a gentle bit of leverage there's no water left in it is there? Can you shift through the gears with the shifter? |
Fill it with kroil? Turn wih breaker bar?
|
Had the missus stand on it and the lock feels mechanical.
Gearboxes will turn even in gear won't they....? I can turn the gearbox and her over whlist also propped against a bench....definitley feels mechanical. |
If somehow it got shifted into 2 gears at the same time is would lock. But unless there is damage to the turret or the shifter gates are destroyed I can't imagine that happening. Maybe a rouge price of debris got in there some how.

If you cant, then at least one shift rod might be locked into gear, which would make it possible for the car to be in two gears at once. If that's the case, then the tranny isn't going to turn. I've never heard of it in a 6-speed, but 5-speeds have been known to get "stuck in reverse" under normal conditions where the inertia of the shift rod carries it from 5 to R as the driver shifts from 5 to N while stopped. |
Okay, the gear lever will sort of go in to 1 gear but not really any others so maybe when it nosed dived down the bank it screwed something up on impact.
I think I will tear it down and see what I have. Hopefully be I will able to / remember how to put it back together if it isn't too messed up internally. But sounds like it might be scrap..... Thanks for your thoughts, much appreciated. |
Sounds like you just need to pop your shift rods back into place...
|
That would be sweet, any clues on how I would go about that? :)
|
How long was it sitting with water in it? Depending on climate rust sets in fairly quickly...

PM me your email, I'll see if I can find my 6-speed service manual
|
I got one too, if frogger can't find his, PM me.

Thanks guys, have done so just now.
To answer the question, was in water for about 1 hour, was then towed to a workshop and drained of oil etc and refilled with diesal. I am a bit sceptical now but we will see....... |
Appreciate the help guys. But a bit of a bugger, that share site won't allow the download wihout paying for premium access. Says I have exceeded my download limt (without having ever been there before...).
It's way too big to succesfully email so I'll try and search elsewhere or if anyone has any other links...? |
