ABS axles on non-ABS car?
Hey all!
I have a 2002 NB, I'm swapping in a 3.6 differential. One of my axles is seized inside the hub, so I will be replacing it. RockAuto has a decent deal on axles, but the inexpensive axles are the ABS ones. From what I understand, the upright casting is the same between ABS and non-ABS models, just that the area for the tone ring is not machined on ABS models. This would make ABS axles incompatible with non-ABS cars. However, what if I could just knock off the tone ring? Would it work then? |
The axles are directly compatible, all spindles have clearance for the tone ring, some are missing a cross drilled set of holes for the sensor itself.
Could still knock it off if you wanted, won't need to though. |
Personally I trust a used OEM axle over any new replacement one. They’re all junk.

I'm running the ABS ring equipped RockAuto axles without any issues on my non-ABS '90 with a 4.1 Torsen swap. They've held up fine to about 10,000 miles of street driving, the last couple thousand at 11.5 psi.
