Anyone running Kumho Ecsta AST?
They're cheap, and from what I hear they handle well.
I'm looking at 205-50-15s. Anyone running these? They seem like a good deal, they get good reviews. I noticed a lot of people in the Honda community are running these, can anyone here give them some good words before I put the money down? |
I am, can't make much of a comparison though, the only other tires I've run were worn P.O. hodge podge randomly swapped shit. They work fine for my needs (.. so far, read not fi,) and have a great wear rating.

I have them on my miata. They're not too bad. I would go wider if i could, but for daily driving you really couldn't find a better cheaper tire
I'm running them for street tires in 225/50/15 on 15x9 6ul's. Ran them once at the autox and they performed pretty well, but my co driver did not get the FTD that he normally does on RA1 or Nitto's. They DO squeal very nicely before they let go. I have had people tell me they are not the best in the rain, but I have seen no problems.
I have them on my prelude. Worst tire in rain and/or snow I've ever driven on. I'd feel more confident on bald 10 year old RT-215s
I have them. They're better then Yokohama Avid H4s, but that's about it. They get hard pretty quick. If I had more money I would've bought something else, but I didn't.
there's no reason i should ever loose traction on my heavy ass fwd auto prelude, but i do on those and they hydroplane like none other in the rain.

i picked up a set last year for like 120, they were used, but almost new. i had them on for like 2 months, they were 195/50/15s. i beat the hell out of them when i had them, they never worn down really, they werent sticky enough for me tho, i went up to 16s with nittos, which werent much better, but they were atleast wider. they managed to take speeds of 120 pretty decent, but if i got on it, i could still light them up anytime i got on the gas at any speed, it kinda sucked....lol... im goin back to 15s this year, i did think of these again, but in a 205/50/15 so i guess theyre not soo bad. but im also planning on getting 2 slicks for the drive wheels for the track, so i didnt really plan them being abused as much as i did with the 195 set i had.... i wanna say i had them on when i beat the g35 i raced around here....
I have them, they get the job done...but not much past it. It is the shit you buy when you are poor.
Thanks for the responses everyone... Guess I'll be looking for a different tire.
I just picked up a half-used set for $100. It'll get me on my 15" Team Dynamics and off the Daisies with Le Mans all-seasons, and hopefully last till I'm starting my turbo build and need some real tires.

Had a set of ASTs on my Miata when I first got my wagon wheelz... They, well, Sucked. ASX's are a MUCH better tire and about the same price but they're still all seasons.
Went from AST to Yoko Parada Spec-II that grip pretty well if its over 80 degrees out. |
I have them, and wish I had spent a little more for the XS of the bat. My advice is to not cheap out on the tire like I did if performance is the end result. Sticky tires can make a slow car fun. I'm now going to sell mine with about 5k them used so I can get a set of RS3s.
I got them because they were cheap (and the only 195/50/15 in stock:jerkit:) They do grip well enough for me (na) normally, but they are awful about hydroplaning and wet traction in general. Fine on the highway and not loud to me, fine for dd.
I planned on getting a stickier set before I even put them on, was just in a rush at the time and needed what was in stock. |
So from what I can gather, the ASXs are better? Based on what I've heard, that's like saying syphilis is better than herpes. Are they actually good or just better than the ASTs?
if you have the money and can get them in your size, find some of the old stock of bfg kdw's..... mine are 168 each, i found them for like 95 each in left over stock....
To me a good DD tire does well in rain, because 95% of us will care about that at some point. Even arid places get monsoon rains and being on bowling shoes out there really sucks. I expect track tires to suck in rain, thats not what they are for. But a good DD will do wel in the rain IMHO.
From what I hear/understand the RS3 is a much better way to go. I saw them for 115 a corner in 225 45 15 at tire rack. Thats pretty cheap in the grand scheme of things. And apperantly they are much stickier |
My friend ran these and a set of star specs. He says the star specs win hands down.
