Auto boxes

1 Attachment(s)
Hey, I have a 54 hillman, running a 1.6 (89) auto running gear. The reason we used the auto was soace and it seemed an easier swop. Obviously i ow wnat more power as the 1.6 auto isn't a real power house! I am going to bang a turbo on it I have ordered a stand alone ecu to start with so i can remove loads of junk from under the bonnet but my question has any one boost the auto box before? did it survive? how strong are they? is there an alternative box option that is an auto??

I know swopping to manual would be easier in the long run, but want to try the auto as it is in there and works fine.....

any pointers would be much appreciatedhttps://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=14633117211954 Hillman Minx (mx5)

Look up level 10 transmission. They have a build kit for the auto

Stock auto will survive exactly 12.7686 psi of boost. No more.

Thanks Glade!
Aidandj so you can turbo with the auto box then????

Pretty sure these auto cars have different wiring harnesses. And i think they also have a different ECU to run the auto trans. I'm sure there is probably a way to get MS to run an auto trans...

Why put yourself through all this trouble?

Transmission control is separate from the ECU. You can MS an auto car. Genesplicer has a build thread somewhere about he boosted a NB auto.

Right. That's what I meant. After reading it again I can see how it could be confusing.

Yes, auto boxes are controlled seperately. You can install a solenoid from an rx7 to make it shift later.

Thanks for the replies :)
I searched the previous posts last night and answered a lot of my questions :))

The rx7 solenoid is it an external one? is there any diagrams out there?

Monk 05-16-2016 02:13 AM

I have seen one, yes.
It's going to take me a bit to find it.

Monk 05-16-2016 02:21 AM

Read this thread : https://www.miataturbo.net/general-m...mission-81328/
I was mistaken about the rx7 solenoid.
You actually want a vacuum shift modulator from a 300zx.
There is a diagram in that thread as well, but it is for an 04.

having spoken to Level 10 it seems that the box will take a fair bit of abuse. with an upgraded torque convertor and valve body they dont think it will have any issue with over 300 bhp :)

down side is the ecu odes play a roll in the gear changes according to them...

also looks like ine is 1991 AS WELL
