Bad torsen?
 

I bought a Torsen for my 7 and it would howl so loud it hurt my ears. Upon tear down I could find no wear on the Ring and pinion, bearings, or Torsen. Is there a way to check clearances in the Torsen to see if it's still usable? I have no Idea if it's a type I or type II. Here are pics of it.

I think the tolerance is just about 0 on those.

So if there is any movement/lash in the gears in the Torsen it's a pretty paperweight?

The only specs i saw in the fsm were for the open diff.

I thought shimming only applied to diffs with clutch packs?

So what are you guys running? Rx7 clutch type LSD's?

The Torsen is actually much better than most clutch-style LSDs (the OS Giken being one, albeit very expensive, exception). I blew mine up drag racing (350+ whp, wheel hop and a sticky track being a bad combination). If your Torsen is still good, I would have no reservations about using it.

howl could be pinion depth, backlash, or bearing preload. the latter two of which are easily adjusted with the right tools and is independent of what TYPE of diff it is.

I'm toying with the idea of getting a better diff, building the RX7 diff in the garage, or just leaving my torsen in. I have too much accel slip in my torsen and I probably don't know what I'm missing on decel.

I dont think you'll like the RX7/Kaaz style. it's too on-off on lift.

Well it's going into my Rx-7 and I've been using clutch types for the better part of 15 years now, so I'm used to them I just wanted to try something new. So back to my original question. Is there a way to check lash in the gears in the Torsen itself to see if it's good or not. Besides putting it all back together and installing it. I don't want to waste the time and money if its bad just to throw it in the trash in the end. Are they rebuild-able like clutch types?
