Brakes make weird BURRRRRRR noise when reversing.

This happened on like the third day after I changed my rear pads. All pads are PBR Ultimas. Third day after changing the pads, whenever I come back from a drive and back into my driveway, the FIRST time I brake the rear pads make a BURRRRRRRRRR type sound. Very loud, and you can FEEL it. Fronts are fine.

What the hell is that? Otherwise they stop flawlessly and the ebrake works.

Mine kinda sorta did that shortly after I changed mine, one of the bolts that hold the caliper bracket on came loose..
might be that? :dunno:

samnavy 08-07-2008 09:37 PM

Your mom makes the same noise.

ApexOnYou 08-07-2008 10:21 PM

My car does the same thing after installing Axxis Ultimates which I think is the same as PBR Ultimates? One thing that I noticed that is more than likely the cause is that the rear pads are either too small (from slide to slide) or my rear slide clips are really warped. Try checking those, I can actually slide my pad up and down a good 1/8".

Remove the shims(if they are in there) and spray the backs of the pads with disc brake quieter.

Had some noise from mine, make sure everything is tight, that was my problem.

IIRC the Ultimates have those cheesy built in shims, so he shouldn't have the clip on shims on the pads, unless his PBRs were different after all. Regardless, disk brake quieter is a good idea.

Pitlab77 08-08-2008 08:54 AM

did you adjust the parking brake?

So remove the shims completely, or apply the disc brake quieter and replace the shim?

I re-used them off my old pads. Was that wrong?

Remove shims, put on disc brake quiet between pads and shims and reinstall with shims. I use the orange CRC stuff. It's a thick liquid in a squeeze bottle. I also put some between the shim and the caliper fingers where the caliper hits the back of the shim. Basically anywhere metal hits metal. Never had a squeak.

Saml01 08-08-2008 10:46 AM

Thanks for the tip, ill do it this weekend and check back.

olderguy 08-08-2008 10:57 AM

I've been removing the shim's completely for years and never had a noise problem. Prior to that, I had shims shifting and causing all sorts of noise and other problems.

The shims were originally there to reduce noise. Which they do not accomplish. Just something else to get fu***d up

Are your rear rotors Lipped?.>.. the new flat pad might have a slightly larger pad area. casuing new matearial to contact with the outer grove. The pad will wear quickly into the grove, and then be fine.....

I had that on the rear of my 97.. went away after the pad wore in...

Set the park brake and drive a little, to help it grove in.

ApexOnYou 08-08-2008 02:06 PM

I am not sure if you should be running the shims with those pads since they have the softer raised spots that are designed to replace the factory shim. I don't think that would make that noise though, it would more than likely be a clicking noise if that was the case.

Saml01 08-08-2008 02:18 PM

Its a like BURRRRRRRRRRRRRR, loud and angry and ends as soon as I let off the brake.

Ill try to record a video tonight for you guys, then you can tell me what I should do.

cjernigan 08-08-2008 02:42 PM

I say bed them going in reverse, see what happens. I love boost going backwards.

ApexOnYou 08-08-2008 06:17 PM

Only does it once in reverse right?

I love you too.

a little break-in maybe?

ps I meant sam in the navy.

johndoe 08-13-2008 03:22 PM

Mine did the same, but only when cold and wet. Because it was only in reverse I never cared much to find out why.

NBdriftpilot 08-21-2008 09:59 PM

no burrrrring sound but right after i put crossdrilled rotors and hawk pads on mine there is a rattle from the front going over bumps but eveything is tight the hell is it

oilstain 08-28-2008 11:36 AM

I noticed a BRRRRR noise the other day, and I could feel it too. I have just changed all rotors and pads. I'll report in later if the noise continues or ceases. I don't do a lot of driving in reverse, honestly.

Jdmiata 11-16-2008 08:36 PM

I have the same problem. Every since I swapped in some hawk pads, whenever I turn the wheel while braking to a stop it will make the burrrrrr noise and it shakes the whole car. Doesnt happen all the time but enough where it became annoying.

Meola 11-17-2008 04:01 PM

I had a similar isssue with my rotors however it was only going forward and I learned that it was when my both my rear calipers siezed up last winter and I was using my front brakes only. I would check you pad and rotor for any type of burring along the edge of the rotor if not it could be possible they werent beded properly or something is slightly loose especially if it only happens in reverse.
