Cheapest clutch to handle ~200rwhp ?

I recently traded my Miata for a JDM WRX (I like the Miata better, but I need something more practical)...But the new owner (which is a girl ;D) will continue my work on the car. She's on a budget too,so we're looking for a cheap clutch that can handle around 200rwhp.
What do you suggest ?
The car is a '92 1.6

FM's level 1-really easy to use and NOT any stiffer than stock. No experience with egay clutches. ACT HD is about $50 cheaper, but holds a lot less. Still enough for you. Sure someone else will chime in with a deal. Personally I tend to stick with a "name" brand clutch. Never had an off brand one personally, but been around several people that cheeped out and regretted it. Chatter, slipped, odd feel.

thirdgen 05-09-2012 06:52 AM

FM level 1 or nothing. Everything else is a waste of time and money for that power goal.

pdexta 05-09-2012 08:24 AM

I had an ebay clutch that I was very happy with until I exceeded the tq rating and it went out. If she really is sticking with 200whp and has the ability to do it herself or con some guy into doing it for her ebay is a great option IMO. $100 vs $350 is a big difference.

Ug, I did this with an eBay clutch. With a flywheel surface and OEM throw out bearing, they're great clutches. However it's one of my biggest regrets. It's the only thing keeping it from being truly streetable, since the 6 puck clutch is an on/off switch. Anything else won't hold 200tqs, so once you get a streetable 200tq clutch you're either at ACT or FM.

Braineack 05-09-2012 08:53 AM

ACT HD or FMI.

honestly, the Exedy Stage I would fit the bill, but dont expect it to hold much more than 200tq.

jacob300zx 05-09-2012 10:21 AM

A used Mazdaspeed clutch will hold that power as well as an F1 racing 6 puck.

matthewdesigns 05-09-2012 11:00 AM

I just installed an FM1 and I still can't believe that it feels so much like stock. If your friend is concerned with pedal weight, you can't go wrong with it, and it'll hold long past the stock rods will so there's room for her to increase power quite a bit.

adamvanxxx 05-09-2012 11:14 AM

Im am going to support my local and recommend south bend clutch.

190tq at $190
200tq at $200
260tq at $290
300tq at $390

I'm using the f1 stage 2 on my nb @15psi and it's holding fine so far. Pedal travel is identical to stock, but it's a little stiffer to depress. Perfect imo.

$147 shipped off ebay.

I have ebay f1 stage 3 clutch and it has not given me problems. sometimes its annoying since its a 6 puck but it has served its purpose. i will cough up the extra dough next time around and get a more streetable clutch from fm

curly 05-09-2012 08:06 PM

Yup, exactly my point. Works wonderfully, but the on/off trait has caught me off guard a number of times. Add in a little hesitation off idle, I've stalled more than I wanna admit.

Braineack 05-09-2012 08:27 PM

I love my stock like clutch that can hld 240tq

Eunos93 05-09-2012 11:00 PM

My f1 stage 3 clutch with 11 lb flywheel performs well. It did give me problems when my car used to overheat. If I let it idle for 15-20 mins it would go a little above half until finally the fan would kick on then I get in try to take off then it starts slipping. I fixed overheating problem and it hasn't done it since. It is like an on off switch but if I stalled I could pop start it at 2mph. EBay is always a gamble but overall I'm happy with it!

buffon01 05-09-2012 11:04 PM

Are the F1 stage 3 still $150?

Exactly, I have the f1 racing stg 3 6 puck. Works Great. But Sucks to DD. Not undrivable, just unpleasant, makes you wish you weren't a cheap ass... reverse always shudders. When it gets hot its even MORE sticky and PITA to drive: so when you get stuck in traffic you get to extra hate it. In the grand scheme of things, unless you're completely broke its worth it to get the fm1 for stock block or fm2 for a built motor (unless racecar then 949 twin). If you want a lightweight flywheel the ebay chromoly one is a helluva lot cheaper than the FM one, works just fine.

Bond 05-09-2012 11:07 PM

I got a 6 puck F1 for $40 off CL. It's an on/off switch, your gf will hate it.

Eunos93 05-09-2012 11:07 PM

I paid 2 something with 11 pound flywheel!

+1 on the reverse shuddering. Definitely will spend more next time but when you're spendin $ on so much things like carillo rods wiseco pistons acl bearings and a turbo setup its hard to go all out on a clutch which is so easily changeable!

buffon01 05-09-2012 11:30 PM

I don't know what you guys are talking about because my F1 is fabulous, BUT I would buy a FM clutch.

mr_hyde 05-10-2012 12:52 AM

I have an MSM clutch and flywheel I took out for a supersize happy meal. Send me a PM with a fair offer and its yours.

Braineack 05-10-2012 08:52 AM

Hey guys, I have a really shitty clutch that sucks to drive, on shutters in reverse, causes me to stall, wheel hops, and makes me look retarded when i drive.

YOU SHOULD TOTALLY GET IT! Youll save like $50.

Bond 05-13-2012 12:03 AM

finally had to drive the miata again. I hate that clutch with a passion, so I do alot of burnouts

zeroox 05-16-2012 12:43 PM

with the amount of labor or $ in the labor to replace a clutch i would not go to cheap. sometimes you get what you pay for. I went ACT HD and have been happy with the feel and performance. I only have about 2000 miles on it but I drive it like a bat out of hell and it has held up well.

aaronc7 05-16-2012 01:13 PM

ill be selling a FM1 with barely 3k miles here soon, as soon as I get pressure plate back from machine shop. I picked up a FM2 in the meantime.

You hit the nail on the head with the amount of labor and possibly the cost of the install. I have seen to many cheap clutches give problems to ever trust using one in my car. The ACT HD is a good street clutch, I had one in my car for about 3 years and I believe now it is still in one of Savingtons track cars. The only reason that I now recommend the FM1 over the ACT HD is that it is a little cheaper, but holds a ton more torque.
