Default for you 8.8 rear people

i came across a ford 8.8 ird 31 spline.... searching for axles, all i find are 28 splined ones..... can anybody recommend me some? i like how the driveshaftshop does theres where it plugs right into the diff and the miatas hub unbroached..... but yet again its 28 spline.

thanks for the recommendations in advance.

Just look for a 28 spline 8.8. They are everywhere for $100. Just find a V8 Thunderbird in the junkyard. Heck, I bought the whole car for $100, kept what I wanted and scrapped it for more than $100. Keep it simple.

31 spline axls are commonly found in the Ford Truck, van, SUVs

28 spline is common in mustangs and thunderbirds, and rangers.

sh4d0wf0xxx: Are you looking for 8.8 IRS stuff or an 8.8 stick axle? Ford made both

So IRS then. I've got more experience with the solid axle version and was going to hassle you if you had intended to put one in a Miata

I thought all the IRS stuff was 28 spline? This exceeds my knowledge with the IRS 8.8. You may want to check out Boss Frog or V8R or other V8/LSx swap Miata outfits, I'm betting they will have more infos.

Where did you get a 31 spline IRS? I didn't think that was possible either...

EDIT: Looked at my books, seems that was a Cobra rear diff and a possible 4X4 tow package Exploder.

Might want to find a 28 center, Even tho it will be weaker, but be cheaper/easier.

Mustang guys explode the 28 spline when they stick some slicks on a stock car. I'd rather run the 31.

How many of the LSx Miata guys are doing this? I was under the impression the Thunderbird IRS 8.8 or the Getrag IRS from a CTS-V were the hot swaps for the LSx crew.

They are. The 8.8 is a bit stouter than the CTS-V diff, plus there are eleventy billion gear options and gears are cheap, plus the diff is cheap.

Most of the info I have shows the 28 spline will go just about 400tq and traction before it pops.

The stock 5.0l block cracks in the lifter valey about the same point.

I rebuilt the stock 7.5/28 spline in my T-bird, I figured it would be a bit till I hit 400tq with hook.
The bird weighs 3640lbs too....

Unless you are one the big boys putting down big numbers, I would have to agree, shelf the 31 spline diff, and grab up a 28spline, since you can find the stubs you need/want easier.

I feel like you should be able to call drive shaft shop and they should be able to make you some custom axles.

Stein: I assume you mean they are using the 8.8, not blowing up the 8.8? That's my fault for not being clear enough. I was under the impression that the lighter weight of the Miata lets you get away with more than the Mustang guys can.

Either way, OP: Y U 8.8?!

Forget the 8.8 swap. Get a 7.5 swap from Martin and be done. You can tuck it up further, as they are oval shaped where the 8.8 is more round.

Ford Driveshaft Flange Yoke fits 7.5 and 8.8 inch Rear Ends 1310 Series with small Ford bolt pattern

http://www.southwestspeed.com/?sec=view_menu&cat=Drivetrain&sub=Driveshafts&ssub =!3\" Aluminum Driveshafts

The Driveshaft Shop | MAZDA 1989-2005 Miata with Ford 8.8 Rear Conversion 400HP Direct Bolt-In Axles - Miata - Mazda - Import Axles

Copy/paste the link for the driveshaft. You should be able to get a front yoke from the driveshaft shop.

Is that 7.5" a drop in kit for 950? Or does it need some fab work?

I think you just have to set the pinion angle.
It's setup for a V8 conversion though so you would need a custom driveshaft and some way to delete the PPF.

I've been tossing ideas for an 8.8 rear swap with otherwise stock miata drivetrain. Not sure if it's been done (haven't really searched) but I do know that some guys who put the 8.8 in Camaros end up welding torque arm (PPF) mounts to the housing. I've also considered fabbing a traditional transmission crossmember in place of the PPF...

Live axle in the F-body. We are talking IRS diffs. Less mullet friendly.
