DIY LSD install
 

I've had my Cusbro LSD sitting around for too long now and want to install it into my diff housing. Is it possible to do it at home with some basic tools (torque wrench, rattle gun, etc) or is it a job that requires specialised tools and experience?
I've looked on here and google and haven't been able to find many good guides for what I am looking to do.

There's a really good write up on miata.net. You'll need a mag base, dial indicator, and a 7-8" micrometer.

Mag base and dial indicator are great for numerous things and fairly cheap, mic is expensive and kind of a one time use thing.

Where do people normally get these tools for a reasonable price from? Being from Australia some of it I can get locally but other stuff would probably be cheaper to get from overseas.

That's the link. I used that page plus the factory service manual for setting mine up. Expect it to take you a few hours the first time you do it, but it's pretty easy work. I bought the measuring equipment from enco. It definitely isn't Starrett quality, but it got the job done.

You shouldn't have to worry about tooth contact if you're just swapping the LSD unit and not touching the pinion, but I checked tooth contact on mine anyway. The FSM says to use "red lead" to check contact, but I couldn't find it anywhere local and used permatex brand prussian blue from autozone. It was hard to read and I'm not a fan. Will definitely try to find red lead next time.

Also, that site says you need a 6-7" mic for the 1.6 diff. It's wrong. You need a 5-6".

Pretty much. If you order online you can get a mic of sufficient accuracy for like 70 bucks so its not like you're buying a $250 mitutoyo.
