Anybody actually try this?
Solo Miata shows 82-84 B2000 pickup had this ratio 3.308.
Solomiata : Transmission : Ring and pinion tooth counts

when I go to Car-Part.com and look up 84 B2000 Carrier it asks weather MT with 3.31 or AT with a 3.909. and it looks like there are plenty listed at around $100.

Will that ring and pinion swap into the Miata carrier like the early solid axle RX7’s does? I currently have an 3.909 out of an 83 RX7 in the Miata housing with my 5 speed. I would imagine the early RX7 solid axle and the truck axle would be very similar. I like my current gearing but the 5 speed wont handle the torque. I have broken 6 transmissions now. A 3.308 would give decent ratios for the stronger 6 speed with a more usable 1st and 2nd gear and a bonus super tall 6th. This is for a car that has 350+ hp and well over 300 ft-lbs.

I just said there are a bunch of them available, even in a local salvage yard. I’m just not sure that it is compatible the same as the early RX7 unit is. And if they are compatible I haven’t herd of anybody who has done it.

I'm sure I could find a set in Houston. I don't have a 7" rear to test in though, just a spare 6".

Let me see if rharris has one sitting around...I'd be willing to gamble on it in the name of science.

Not going to happen.

I think the 6 speed is way compromised on gearing selection for a super high HP car without a rear end ratio in this range.
Makes the 5 speed Quaife option even at 2 to 3 times the price that much more appealing.

Emphasis on diesel.

This ratio was available by option on the diesel. When at mazmart, I somehow was able to acquire data that showed there were only 200 such optioned trucks--25 years ago. I actually have a 3.308 diff from a diesel truck, verified by VIN. It is exactly the same as the diff I pulled from a gas truck: 1" too large for standard miata diff use.

After searching for *years* and buying multiple truck diffs, it's my opinion that Randy was wrong.

I have not verified this, but I am suspicious that the gear set may work in a TII housing. However I have no TII housing to compare.

Off topic somewhat but...

Found an 82' 626 pumkin today with a 3.63 r&p today! Junk yard in WA. $80 shipped for the whole assembly. The quote over the phone was cheaper than shown online.

Moral is the 3.3 may not work but the 3.63's can be found cheap if you hit up junk yards with older imports.

car-part.com has a bunch of yards listed with rwd 626 rear ends available. Maybe this list will help ease the pain of those who hoped the 3.3 would work!

1st gear may be worthless regardless. Even so 3.63 is going to be better than the 3.9 (in my case) or 4.1 for the rest of the gear range.

And my pessimism was well founded. Every now and then someone will really luck out and find a 3.3 someone had laying around, but actually going out and finding one on purpose is quite tough. I looked for a while out of curiosity and never did find one. Most of them are already snatched up or broken beyond use. Still wish someone would manufacture them. Richmond was talking about it, but I guess it never happened. Demand is so limited. Bastards!

3.3 and 6 speed would be heaven. Similar to stock 5 speed, but slightly wider, then the 6th gear like an overdrive. Even for a built n/a car I think it would be nice. Not so wide a gear that it kills acceleration, but enough that the gears don't feel useless.

I wouldn't discount the possibility of running the old truck 3.308 as part of a TII diff swap.

That being said,I'd be more comfortable running a new 3.6 r&p from comp than a junkyard 626 set. Keep in mind how expensive the diff is, the cost of set up labor, and the time and effort involved in the swap. IMO, not worth skimping $200 on a part that could ruin your day/week/month if it failed.

That is my opinion as well.

1st and 2nd are pretty much like the 5 speed with a 4.30. On a car with 3X + stock naturally aspirated torque and a really good amount of power it seems like you spin the tires and run through 1st faster than you can shift. Once your in second your still spinning the tires and you cant go fast enough even to stay in second for most autocross courses thus requireing you to make shifts to third, also on way too many tracks the shift between 2nd and 3rd needs to happen before you even can get off a tight corner, just annoying.

Run the 6 speed with a 4.30 and ignore 1st and then 2nd and 3rd look pretty useful but I’m already getting to redline in 5th with the 5 speed 3.909 down the front straight of my local track. The 6 speed 4.30 would run out about 20mph sooner and I would be watching the Corvettes pull away.

Every time I look at going to the 6 speed my worries that I really won’t like it come back and my desire to get a Quaife 5 speed increases.

I've rebult 4 of them myself and never had one fail on me yet after I rebult it. none of them used new parts.
