Door Bar Group Buy Round 2!

10 Attachment(s)
I am going to do another run of the door bars I built last year. I am going to improve on last year’s bars in several ways. This year I will be testing the bars in a similar fashion to how Flyin’ Miata tested their frame rails. I also have two ideas on ways to improve the stiffening effects of the door bars. If anyone has any other ideas or comments, please post here or pm me.

I will be ordering the tubing tomorrow, and will be buying enough metal for 10 sets of bars. The first 10 sets will have a group buy low price, and if people are still interested after the first 10 are sold, I will order more metal for another run.

Onto the details!

-Bars are mandrel bent 1.5” .120” thick DOM tubing.

-Mounting plates are 3/16” thick.

-Fully TIG welded.

-Fit any 1990-2005 Mazda Miata.

-Comes with a backing plate for the floor mount, and grade 8 hardware. The backing plates and nuts/bolts that are used with a hard-dog roll bar are re-used for the top mount.

-Door bars only integrate with hard-dog roll bars. They could be used without a roll bar using additional backing plates, but this is not recommended.

-Top plates have slots so that lateral position can be adjusted slightly.

-These door bars do contact the stock seat padding slightly, but do not affect seat fitment. The bars are NOT confirmed to fit with racing seats.

-Bars do not interfere with manual window cranks; window can still be opened and closed with door closed.

Improvements for 2011-2012:

-All mounting plates and backing plates will be cut using a Water Jet.

-Floor mounting plates and backing plates will be enlarged, to improve the strength at the floor mount location. This should increase stiffness and be a minimal weight increase.

-Gussets will be added at both tube-to-mounting plate locations. This will further increase the strength of the bars.

-Stiffening test will be done to prove the results, in a similar fashion to Flyin’ Miata’s test for their frame rails seen here: http://flyinmiata.com/tech/twisting.php

Specifications:

-Roughly 20 lbs. for the pair of bars.

-Bars will come in bare metal or primed with a self-etching primer if requested. I’m also searching around to find the best pricing on powder coating.

Price:
For the first 10 buyers, the price is $210 shipped to the lower 48, or $180 picked up from me in Los Gatos, CA. After the group-buy, price will go up 20 dollars picked up and 30 dollars shipped.

Bars are estimated to be ready to ship by the first week of January.

If you want in on the group buy price, add your name to the list here. Once the bars are ready to ship I will collect payment.

Thanks guys, Let me know if you have any questions, comments, concerns!

Are the hard dog mounting plates the same on all hard dog bars? Very interested, but don't know that I want to do the roll bar thing at the moment. (We autocross, don't track or really even have time to drive 2 lane highways dangerously)

The door bars only bolt in in conjunction with the Hard core, Sport, or Xtreme roll bar lines. You are correct, the more basic models sold by Bethania Garage do not have the same mounting locations.

I might be in. Do you have 'em installed on your car right now?

wittyworks 12-17-2011 03:29 PM

Nope I don't currently have any made, I was waiting to see some interest before I bought all the expensive material, so now I'm probably only going to start with 5 pairs. Abe I'll let you know as soon as I finish them.

Bump, I'm sending pms to everyone who showed some interest to see if anybody still wants awesome door bars for cheap. If i don't get any interest before the end of the year I'll probably cancel the group buy plans.

Make your voice heard if you're still interested!!

I know you haven't crash tested these things yourself, but does anyone know how these hold up in a side impact? Im all for adding stiffness to the limp noodle that is my car but I'd rather not crush my pelvis in the process in the unfortunate event i get t boned. And yes I have tried searching but all I can come up with is how helpful they are at reducing chassis flex. Thanks

Witty: is there any wat to add a lateral support under the car that would anchor the front atatchment points of the door bars ? something that would address the side impact question. I havent been under the car in a while to know if its even possible. Or maybe a two piece brace that goes under the dash somehow?
