Hankook RS3 vs Toyo R1R

With everything else sorted, now I'm trying to decide what rubber to go with. With everything I've read, these two tires are pretty much the best street performance / Track tire you can get in the 225/45R15 size. Now, my question is which one do I buy and why? BTW this is a no flame zone :giggle:

Braineack 02-13-2010 03:40 PM

have they ever been directly compared? If it were me I'd get the one that's cheapest, but that's cause I'm cheap.

R888 performs better than R1R on the track.

Don't think they've been compared....heres an old thread that compares the R1R and RS2 but I wonder how peoples opinions would be with the new RS3...https://www.miataturbo.net/forum/t35691/

Price isn't really a huge deal with me. I'm more worried about having the more capable tire....if its a huge price difference obviously I would probably go with the cheaper tire but I think that they are within $15/tire of each other though

At this point in time, my car will see the most use on the street with the occassional track day. If things change in the future I'd definitly get a deticated track tire.

Stein 02-13-2010 05:15 PM

I can't comment on the other, but I do love the RS3's for a DD tire. Supposed to be very capable for a track day tire. I only have about 3K miles on mine at about 200 whp but they hooked well ( I could roll on in first and bang second and they stuck) and still have the flames and logos in the tread so less than 1/16" wear, probably closer to 1/32".

SKMetalworks 02-13-2010 09:40 PM

I'm going to go with the RS3's just because I've read some things and they just ended up sounding like a better tire

I am hoping to get a set of the rs3s soon, I have used the rs2s on a few of my cars and loved them. I am interested to see if there is any difference in them.

From what I have read by past RS2 users is that they are very happy with the improvements.

tyson87 02-14-2010 08:26 AM

I just put rs3s on my car in the rear. Deft slot of grip. They are quiet too. Paid 125 shipped for one.

pdexta 02-14-2010 08:56 AM

When I got my R1R's they gripped really well. I had no traction issues at all from 1st gear. As they've worn they've lost a lot of that. They're about a year old now, something around 4000 miles on them, I'm making less power than I was and I can spin well into 3rd gear. Still have thread left but will probably need replacing in another 2000 miles or so. I've got some pretty decent camber wear and drive like a jackass so I'm sure the average life expectancy would be a good bit longer than that. Not sure how they would perform against RS3's, but I'll be going with whichever is cheaper next time I buy.

still, thats barely a stretch. sidewalls are flat.

what size 615s are those?

Rennkafer 02-14-2010 12:40 PM

It looks about the same stretch as the 225/45 RS3's on my 9's. When you set them flat on the ground the rim hits first but just barely, not a big stretch. And the RT-615's I'd guess are 205/50's, stack height looks about the same as the set of RT-215's that came off my car compared to the 225's.

I ment he was correct in saying it was a 15x9....not that it was stretched

240 to Miata, hows your friend like the R1R's?

Braineack 02-14-2010 01:21 PM

I've driven a miata with the R1R, they are hard to break loose even with adsurb flow parts making 275rwhp.

http://www.boostedmiata.com/gallery2...2/DSC_0086.JPG

Cspence 02-14-2010 01:26 PM

I've been trying to research as much as possible, reading reviews, opinions, and articals and it seems they are both equal tires for the most part. I think I may end up going with the R1R for the mere fact that the tread looks sick....stupid I know, but there is nothing else that would make me choose one over the other at this point ($15/tire isn't a biggie to me).

225/45 R1R on a 9" vs 215/45 Azenis on a 7"

I know Town Fair Tire price matches online compeditors...here is the cheapest I have been able to find the R1R online ($123) if anyone else ever needs this for reference.

$123
TOYO Proxes R1R 225 45ZR15 87W @ TiresDirect.Net

$128

Braineack 02-14-2010 03:46 PM

judging the tread alone, looks like the RS3 will be better in rain.

I got a quote just for 205/50 r1rs from townfair in old saybrook. When I didnt get back to them they called me back up and offered me a great deal. Im pretty sure it was lower than online companies. I blew my motor up the week before so I had to say no.

tyson87 02-14-2010 05:24 PM

my rs3s are awesome in the rain

tann3r 02-15-2010 11:16 AM

I just ran RS3's on 8" 6uls last weekend at the track and I will say that I am very impressed. Not sure how well they will take heat as it was in the 40's all weekend, but they did not go off during the 30 min sessions.

I have not seen the R1R so i have no direct comparison, but IIRC the R1R was designed more as an autox tire.

cueball1 02-15-2010 02:52 PM

Everything I've read about the R1R says they are great new but lose traction and suck in the rain when they have some wear on them. Sucks there aren't more reviews of the RS3 out there yet. Everything I've seen is promising but not thorough enough.

tann3r 02-15-2010 03:29 PM

here;s a vid from last weekend onthe RS3's

Man, that looks soooo sexy! I would totally rock those! Why wasn't that car entered in the Jan/Feb calendar? :giggle:

R1Rs are very nice for street and autox. I've driven pretty darn fast in the rain. They do get pulled in standing water and are susceptible to hydroplaning...but you'd have to be pushing it. I'll add more info once they get to about 50% tread. Toyos in my experience do pretty darn well until you get near the bald tread depth. And you'd have to drive like an asshat or have something prone to spinning in the rain like an MR2 turbo, Miata, etc.

Braineack 02-16-2010 09:10 AM

lol. I remember our 80mph drive up to PA in the rain, I thought you had balls.

I still do and they work fine! Granted, when I "got on it", it did get squirrelly. I would like to see if the Hankooks would do better. If so, and I didn't autox, then I'd definitely consider the Hankooks. Otherwise, the R1Rs are a blast, predictable, and provide great grip.

I've posted this pic before but one more time would not hurt.

Wife driving the Auto-X car in heavy rain.

225/45/15 R1R's at full tread. Although they gatored from the begining they ended up lasting all season with about 140 runs on them. Very nice tire but they do oveheat with hot temps and seemed to work the best at around 40psi for me.

Also I took 2nd place in STS this season in DC area SCCA out of a very strong field in a car that should not be competetive.

I will be running a set of shaved Hankooks, shaved XS's next year and R1R's full tread for Rain tires.

saint_foo 02-16-2010 02:11 PM

^Please does not posted pix of MR2, traitor.

keep us posted on the shaved tires you run. I'd like to see a comparison between the XS and the rs3

MicaCeli 02-16-2010 02:27 PM

Yeah I will be running.

205/45/15 XS's on 15x7's Shaved
225/45/15 RS3's on 15x7.5's Shaved
205/45/15 R1R's on 15x7's full tread for rain.

I will let you guys know if you are interested.

swimming108 02-16-2010 08:47 PM

i think that i will be using the 225/45/15 RS3's this upcoming season on my 8"6UL's. Probably will get them at the end of April. I predict that is when my t1r's will go bad.

i also plan on doing the Fredrick autox a lot this season since it is closest.

Coolio! See you there on my 225 R1Rs.
