Has anyone else's torsen taken a shit?

I've had 6 miatas, 5 of which have had torsens so I know how one should lock up. After the last day of beating the crap out of my car at a drift event I noticed the inside wheel lighting up on the track and a delay in the diff locking on the last run of the day. I'll admit that I should have changed the fluid as I just picked this car up, but has anyone else experienced this with a torsen after a sustained beating? I had a similar issue in my S2000, which was followed by a total differential failure.

I've got a spare torsen incase it's totally done, but I'm surprised that I could do one in with stock power?!?!? If it's toast I'm going to weld it and swap diffs for track and drift use

Curious if anyone else has had one take a crap on them? or if maybe mine was low on fluid or something else off the norm?

its pretty easy to break the hexi-gears if you abuse it. They tend to explode when people drag race and clutch dump them.

That causes the car not to drive, doesn't make it not lock up

Shock loadin is what does it. Wheel hop mostly.

oh i wasnt reading.

it's mechanical, unless the gears are wearing down significantly to the point they dont engage (without somehow exploding the rest), i cant see how there could be a delay in lock up. Watch the video on how they work.

Gotcha, I'll check that out.

On the run where the diff started locking up with delay I ended up with one tire on the chords and one with good tread at the end of the session. The track really ate up people's driver's side tires due to the layout. My thought was maybe drifting for a couple of laps with that huge difference in grip coefficients wore something in the diff, but that's a wild guess.

I'm going to drain the fluid asap and see if there are shavings/if fresh fluid helps restore its functionality.

maybe this is a sign that you should stop figure skating.

/\ this

A torsen won't lock if one tire doesn't have any traction. If your corded tire was too slippery it could take time to lock up.

But yes, I agree with Brain and 17psi

you coulda at least said 224kpa

haha I'm still prepping my car for track work more than drifting... but sometimes it's fun to figure skate inches off your friend's doors.

Megasquirt and injectors go in next week, gotta get this gt2560 in there to be cool like 17psi :giggle:

I have 2 Miatas and a TransAm with Torsens and I can't feel any of them engage and disengage. I know that they are working but they feel seamless.

I had a MSM torsen that felt rough when turning right. Possibly like it was grip/slip/grip/slip very rapidly. Also very noticeable and unlike any other Miata we have had here. So I took it apart and found that the pressure plates (not sure of the exact term, brass plates with a waffle pattern) were very worn.

I guess I should see if those are available and rebuild the unit.
