has anyone fabbed up the garage vary brake ducting...
I have the GV front lip on my 1990 and going to figure out how to mount ducting to it so I route the air to my brakes. Its a weird shape...has anyone come up with a good way, short of fabbing something up in fiberglass, to mount the ducting...
|
I thought about it, something like just a little ramp to deflect incoming air toward the brakes, nothing major.
|
Its just such an odd shape at the air dam. I will probably have to fab something out of clay or foam that takes it to a 2.5 inch round and then glass it... project for next weekend if I can't find anything easier/better.
|
I have the same problem to deal with on my r-pack lip.
|
well looks like I may be off to tap plastics to buy a few sheets of fibreglass and epoxy stuff...I never had much luck with foam molds...and clay is kinda pricey for one shot deals...may need to give foam one more try.
|
Well I am on the search for brakes to go along with this ducting... And for all of the "1.8 brakes and good pads is all you need..." people, you can turn away now.
I am hesitant to go with the Goodwin kit (beautiful kit BTW) due to the stock rear caliper and the light weight front caliper. I checked wilwoods site and upgrading to a heavier front caliper would mean new rotors and bracket for front and rear....Not something I would want to do. It would be easier to start from scratch. Mostly this is a rambling more so than a question...well no I guess its not. Anyone know of a brake kit that uses a caliper up front that has a larger brake pad than the wilwoods from goodwin and uses a new caliper with more meat for heat out back...short of fabbing something up myself...cuz I am lazy and don't have the time... |
Alright, here is the update... Shit canned the garage vary lip/brake duct idea and found a used bumper skin, albeit no plastic supports with it. I will have to transfer those over for the track day. I bought the Home depot brick border to install a lip from an old track car. I am going to cut holes in the new(used) bumper cover for the NACA ducts I have sitting around and duct those to the front brakes....
Which BTW will be the wilwood kit for mini's that will be adapted to fit the miata. And out back I will use the monster miata brakes that use the Rx-7 vented calipers on wilwood hats etc. Well thats the plan anyways....wish me luck. I have 20 days to complete it all...Thats incluing work days...great. anybody in concord area want to lend a hand....Ill provide the beer.... |

I was a little disappointed with the front pad surface area - it isn't significantly more than stock 1.8 pads. However, the 4 piston Wilwood Forged Dynalite calipers provide for much more confidence inspiring rapid deceleration (although you'll still be outbraked by Porsches). I put HT10's in all the way around for the first time out. Waaaayy too much rear brake bias! I tuned it out on day 2 with Hawk HP+'s in the rear. I'll do a more detailed write up in Dec. I have 2 more track events this month before the year's done. KB |

I will post all sorts of Pics on friday..or tomorrow if its only a 12 hr day at work. Ordering the Mini/Miata wilwood kit on Friday as well. Hopefully it will be here by mid next week so I can put it all together by the track day on the 22nd. |

Ok so the new wheels and all the tires are in. 3 sets of 949's. One set of Azenis for the street. One set of NT01's for dry days and a set of R888 full treads for rain...http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...4/100_1398.jpg
The brakes are on order and being shipped. I need to order bolts, and have a piece machined... and for them I have a new nose with the home depot air dam and brake ducts... Attachment 210151 Attachment 210152 |
:eek5::eek5::eek5: You wanna let me borrow a set of rims and tires? You have plenty... haha.

Just ordered the brake lines from FM. I was going to do it from Goodwin, but theirs were almost $100 more...
UPS says the brakes will arrive today (probably in the afternoon so I can't get the parts down to the machine shop). But I will get photos up once they get here and document the install (minus the braided lines because they are on order....) |

The kit just arrived...Oh boy oh boy oh boy.
Here is the stock rotor vs the wilwood kit with the dynapro caliper; Attachment 210081 Here is it all in the 15x8 949 wheel...nice fit with lots of extra room. Should have gone with the 6 Pots. http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...4/100_1421.jpg This is the progression of the build. (I had to stop at step two because hubs are at machine shop for machining. Dude said..you don't need these back right away right??? yeah take as long as you want...not..you dipshit. I want them back ASAP...oh well, another hurdle taking time.) Stock Attachment 210082 Hub and disc off and out to machine shop Attachment 210083 |
Here is the goodwin wilwood caliper vs the mini wilwood

yea holy fuck 3 sets.... your going to T-hill soon right?
Might wanna check out the TEAM racing event in DEC, 160.. |
here's my contribution to this thread, which is quickly becoming the 'ultimate' brake setup. big ass rotors, big ass calipers, brake ducts, and this:
Targa Miata Its Keith's car, but I'm Josh. I gave him a picture of mine mounted there about a year or two ago, and I finally plumbed it this weekend. fairly simple and only about $70 in parts if you already have the proportioning valve. And that includes a $38 double flaring tool, so if you already have that and the proportioning valve (maybe under the hood? tsk tsk) its only about $25 in plumbing. |
Oh and P.S. if y'all start bitching about "you can't do that unless you strip your interior", too bad. Its why I say 1.8 brakes are enough, I'm not hauling around about ~400lbs of dead weight that a fresh-from-the-factory '93 miata has.
|
snowboarder. I hope to be going to T-hill in Dec as well. I'll be there in two weeks.
yeah, three sets. One for street duty. two for track days. |

here is the rotor installed (minus the correct machined hub, so its not ready yet to be driven) I just wanted to see how it looked bolted up...
Attachment 210074 and stock again: Attachment 210075 |
Joe, swapping those calipers and keeping the stock rubber brake lines its almost like nothing, IMO.
|
Oh those lines are not hooked up. Wouldn't fit if I tried. I was just making sure everything lined up.
|
i would rock a big brake job if the rotors were affordable. It would be really cool if we could use 11.3" VW VR6 rotors and redrill. I still have a few sets in the garage.
|
Damn. Would love to have Connor's cash to throw at my car. Holy crap! The 3 sets of 6uls, big brakes and quality work gets me hot...
Would love to see more on the threadjack corrado conversion for us with more realistic budgets! Iluv you need to start your own thread and walk us through it. |
Yeah, I had to sell quite a few toys to get this rolling.
|
Ok, I have everything but the rear hubs and brake pads...I will have the install pics later tonight..if i don't get too drunk....drinking and installing brakes...hmm. Maybe I'll put the beer back and get a coke instead...

Any chance we could get a picture of the bumper with the splitter installed on the car? I'm interested to see how it looks...

Ugly:
Attachment 209949 It looks better now that I have the lights installed. Once I dropp it back on the ground and set the ride height, I am going to need to trim it. I can take about an inch off before I hit the brake ducts...and I will probably have to trim it all. Its odd, it looks really shitty in this pic, but with the turn signals in etc it really looks clean...asides from it being grey. |
fuckin bad ass man! love those calipers so much....
|
Easy to do as well.
After december I am going to have hubs made to eliminate the centering ring and have a caliper bracket made that does not need the spacer...but for the 6 pot radials...They will fit and use a 30% larger pad. Then I will have a bracket made and put these 4 pots in the rear. (I am going to replace the stock ebrake handle with a hydraulic one) Once I get that drawn up for the Cnc'rs I will post it up. Won't be soon though. |
so did you actually need this much brake? Any pics of how you attached the brake ducting at the spindle?
Thanks |

That and so far I am in it for less than the goodwin kit by about $200 for both the fronts and the rears with carbotech pads. |
Oh I have not hooked the brake duct line up yet. If I have enough time before Friday (going to the track all weekend) I will try to fab up an aluminum backing plate with 2.5 inch hole thingy, Like ISC's but for these bigger rotors.
|
So after 2 days at thunderhill here is the lowdown. The fronts worked great. I hate the RX-7 rear calipers. There is a little pressed in pin that holds a spring thats connected to the ebrake thingy. If the pin comes out, the spring comes off and the seals come undone and shoot brake fluid everywhere.
And it seems that they like to leak...this on rebuilt calipers...so, looks like I will be looking for new rears, or go for the 6 pot 4 pot conversion sooner than later. Do I need them, no...but will it give peace of mind...yes. What else did I learn...the R888's are nicer than the NT01's. I need a front hollow RB sway bar and a non stock radiator, and a new rear end. My Koni adjuster's are stuck 2 turns from full soft...(grrr) Lotus Elises are waaaaaaaaaay over rated... And the car is stupid fast... oh and the kid whose name on this board is "snowboarder" is a one fast driver. |
