If you have the skills, then I guess it would be great. I don't think this will end up being a cheap solution. I'm not trying to be a downer. I just don't want someone new to the hobby reading this, deciding it is the latest and greatest, and then getting in over their head.

I am back on board the 3.636 gear swap band wagon.

I am in the process of taking mine apart right now. What about it didn't work out for you? I have a friend who is an s2k dude looking for stuff for me to see if one could just throw the main and countershaft in the miata case. This was my plan. If the ap1 gears would work, I would sell my pretty 3.636 torsen waiting to go in.

An mnetter in this thread , ChasH, concluded the S2K box had no similarity to the other boxes.

Here's an article with images of an S2K box being torn down.

AP1 mainshaft diagram
AP1 countershaft diagram
AP1 case diagram

Does this help anyone that has a clue when it comes to these gearboxes? Me, I have no idea what I'm looking at here. Bunch of parts.

Agreed, not for the faint of heart.... I want broken ones because 1. they are cheap 2. I have access to a toasted s2k trans at work that's just sitting there and 3. I just want them for mock up purposes. If any of this works out like any of us hope it will, I will go on to find good condition transmission to meld together. Whether the gear swap works out or I'm able to make an adapter, either way would be cool for me.

What is toasted in it? If you mail me the main and countershaft i will pay shipping if it isnt something crazy wrong with them. I have a naked 6 speed case laying here.

If the AP1 gears would go in I would take the 3.63 setup off your hands ;)

You're like the 4th person to ask, lol.

But, I would be the first to pay ;)

Just so you know... I haven't forgotten about you. I'm still working on getting you a set of gears to try fitment. I also found out that the miata trans and s2000 trans are very very close to the same length, so the whole swap seems like it's feasible.

I'm curious about this. A small discussion was started on M-S.com and I'm carrying it over here for all you tech-minded people. I'll try to recap and bring everyone up on what we've found so far.

Mazda 6-speed transmission, Made by Asin, code AZ6
Other models using a variation of this trans:
Honda S2000 (AP1 confirmed, AP2 unsure) , Mazda Miata/MX-5/Roadster, Mazda RX-8 (MkI for sure, MkII not sure), Toyota Altezza/Lexus IS200
Various Ratio's availiable:
Mazda MX-5 gear ratios: 3.760 2.269 1.645 1.257 1.000 .843

Honda Gear ratios: 1st: 3.133 2nd: 2.045 3rd: 1.481 4th: 1.161 5th: 0.943 6th: 0.763

Mazda RX8 Gear ratios: 3.76:1 2.27:1 1.65:1 1.19:1 1:1 0.84:1 (2002)

(2009+) 3.82 2.26 1.54 1.18 1.00 0.79

Lexus IS200/Altezza: 3.874 2.175 1.484 1.223 1.000 0.869

I do know the S2000 AP1 transmission is entirely different externally. You can't swap the center section, the tail shaft is different, as is the bellhousing. I assume internals are very similar. RX-8 Mk1 has identical internals to the AZ6 as confirmed from an outside source.

Also, aftermarket gear set for the 6-speed? Check:
http://www.par-engineering.com/secti...da&sectionId=7

Just bust out the benjamins...

So, I'm not sure if any of it will swap, but who's any idea on the matter? I'm starting to look for some junked other brand transmissions to test it out, and also looking for first hand experience.

Tyia,
~Nick

Kind of unrelated but did have a 1996 Saturn 5 speed with a twincam and changed out only 5th gear with one from a singlecam. Worked very well and reliable and gave me the much lower revs in 5th with an extra large difference between 4th and 5th. dropped 70mph revs by about 600rpm and netted me about 8 extra mpg. Wish I
could do something similar with my 2006 Miata.
