heavy duty struts?

I tow a trailer with my miata pretty often, I want some struts that can take a lot of abuse/weight. Are there any coilover setups that would work? Thanks in advance for any advice.

...what is the tongue wait of the trailer? I can't imagine it's high enough that stiffer springs are necessary.

I cant think of any good struts for the miata.

Rancho Add-a-Leaf Kit

how big a trailer are we talking? Most of the hitches are only rated to 2000# which gives you max 300# of tongue weight. Is your trunk packed full of stuff that could be moved to the trailer?

I also would suggest an add a leaf and maybe a longer shackle. I prefer the travel of the rancho 5000 series for pulling trailers.

I'm having problems thinking of a single strut that will bolt up actually.

It's actually the lack of a panhard bar that hurts Miata towing the most.

+1 You can reverse the eyelets to gain a bit of lift to compensate for the loads.
With a longer shackle, also add some spring helpers to offset axle wrap.

Vintage mt.net thread. I love you gays. :makeout:

Yup, the axel is going to need a shim to keep those u joints happy. Basically its almost impossible without spending 2k+ to tow more than 100lbs with a miata.

While youre at it get an axle flip kit and have new leaf spring mounts welded up by an exhaust shop. Be shure to verify the pinion angles.. if you have a turbo look into traction bars too.

If the back end still sags with the axle flipped and extra leafs you could always look into a body lift kit

Will a Watt's Link eliminated the need for the Panhard?

You'll need to source a kit, but they can be pricey.

While you're doing all this you might as well install a crawler gear as well. Never know when you'll have to pull that trailer into the bush.

jacob300zx 01-16-2011 04:22 PM

linuxbox, since you've been a good sport so far I will actually try to answer to the best of my ability. Your thread was derailed because you didn't search and din't use your common sense.

Though a shock might help slightly the springs are going to help the most. If you actually ran a decent spring rate say 700/400 etc it would increase your towing capacity. Then make sure you have the correct tongue weight. Too little and your trailer is all over the road. Too much and your car is sitting on the axels.

hustler 01-16-2011 08:22 PM

Jackoff300zx has a point.

I have a 400lb trailer and very little tongue weight, less than 50lb. I ran on 550/325 Tein flex and there was no problem with the car on that pull but it bounced a little. Now I have AST w/ 700/400 and it's noticably better with zero bouncing, lol. AST is not only the leader in racing dampers, but an excellent trucker damper if you're haulin a load and need to run from the cops considering I've had the trailer at around 110mph and it pulls fine at these speeds.
