How should I price my 3.63 Torsen swap?

I think this is the right place to post this.

I have a complete 3.63 swap I'm thinking of getting rid of. Fully rebuilt last summer by a respected spec Miata shop (York Automotove) when the 3.63s were installed.

The swap would come with the diff, carrier (with new energy suspension bushings) and axles.

What's a fair price?

In today's market you're going to have a hard time moving that unit. Pretty much everybody who cares is either going for the 3.308 or has already done the upgrade. I've been seeing the 3.63 units go for $125 - $150 lately, though that is typically without the axles. If you really need to get rid of it, I'll give you $175 for the lot if we can work out something reasonable for shipping to 33952.

pschmidt 02-25-2009 08:46 PM

:) You have a deal. I'll throw in the 4.30s as well.

For $175 I'll take it down to the dope fiend's recyling center in wonderful Baltimore. :fawk:

I thought the 3.3 was a unicorn. Is there some new news that I don't know about? (Haven't been on m.net in ages...)

ArtieParty 02-25-2009 09:17 PM

Why are you thinking about getting rid of it? I might be interested.

pschmidt 02-25-2009 10:14 PM

I'm considering swapping over to the CTS rear. It all depends if I can offset a chunk of the cost by selling what's in there now.

what he said.

Ben knows the going rate. Pretty sure mazmart sold them professionally setup for like $1-1200 but I could be way off base.

ZX-Tex 02-26-2009 12:11 AM

Not by much. Just the 3.63 gears alone go for $320 new. In the diff, ready to go with shafts, gotta be worth several hundred at least.
If I had just not done my 3.63 conversion I would be ready to talk price.

Joe has to be serving up a large slice of sarcasm pie at $175.

hustler 02-26-2009 09:14 AM

I'm in the market for 3.63 gears currently. Who has the smokin' deal?

Ben 02-26-2009 05:48 PM

When I was at mazmart, I imported them from Japan. Took like 5 months. After the part price, we got $500 for set up labor.

I would ask $1500 for the entire package, but most people will probably only want the chunk.

Me too. I hear they are working on a version that will work for us turbo guys. Let us know how the research goes.

Savington 02-26-2009 09:00 PM

Labor is worth nothing. It's worth a standard Torsen price +200 for the 3.63s.

Now we're talking. Did someone say 350whp in hustler's car?

Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha! I assume you are being sarcastic, but since you are usually one serious motherfucker... If you find some desperate fuck who's willing to eat the labor cost more power to you.

However considering...
A) the bare 3.63 R&P are not commonly available
B) assembled 3.63 torsens are rarer than hen's teeth
C) labor to assemble is more expensive than the part itself
D) all 3.63 owners know exactly what they have and the $$$ spent

Unless you steal one, I don't think you find a 3.63 torsen with all the labor discounted out.

edit: forgot a very important word in sentence two

posidon42 02-27-2009 12:12 PM

I was ready to buy an assembled one from Mazmart last year for $1100. Then they ran out and the price went up $200. The new price on these units is why I am looking at the CTS. For those of us just running turbos, we should be able to get away with a cheaper axle since we don't have to have it rated for 400 lb-ft of torque.

On topic, I would price it about $900-1000 and see what you get for it.

oh you can find idiots attempting to recoup labor...you just won't hear stories about people buying them. ever.

Hustler put a lot of time and money into his car. Does that mean that his car, plus parts, plus labor equals the real selling value of the car?

For most anything else I would agree, but not for this, not with current availability.

Let me put it this way hustler... the relatively more common 3.9 torsens sells for more than what sav is hypothetically offering. (even on this forum full of cheap mofos like myself) 3.9 prices should cover all the parts and labor on a 3.63 torsen if you played your cards right.

To the OP, $800 would be rock bottom from a knowledgeable seller who would just rather have the money and move on. $950 OBO sounds about right. Good luck.
