I need some heavy flow pads... You know, for the street?
 
I need to figure out which brake pads to buy for the street and a wee bit of autocross. I'm looking to spend a moderate amount of money (120 A full set - shipping) a lot of people suggested oem on miata.net. In order of importance I want this:

performance
long lasting
low to no noise

places where I am will ing to compromise:

dusting

It's gotta work in the cold, I don't mind an initial bedding in, and I would like fade resistance. I've got brand new rotors btw. Whatchu got MT.net??

Based on your criteria and price, I'd say OEM as well. Carbotech's will double your budget. Not sure on the price of the Hawk street models.

I really like my axxis ultimates. I'd suggest them as an alternative to hawk HP+.

$99 per axle for rotors and pads at planetmiata.com, hawk hps+. I could have the wrong site, product, and/or price, so don't quote me. You've gotta call to order. They worked great cold or hot, didn't squeak or dust much, and lasted roughly 20,000 miles, including 3-4 amature track days.

i guess the question was answered. so hijacking time. i got thoses hawk hps plus pads all round with the stock size slotted and cross drilled DBA rotors. and good ridge steel lines. but these pads are great!!! no fade, great bite, kinda lot of dust not to bad tho. my question was what the hell is with the squeaking. its been about 10k miles on these pads. they are about half life and still squeaking like crazy. is it just me? like did i not bed them in right? when i did it was like -20 out side

Funny.. I have run many sets of HP+ and any time they start squealing, I just run the car up to like 80 and slam on the brakes. It seems they can get glazed from just driving around and like to be heat cycled :dunno: The dust gets a bit annoying from the HP+, but I don't mind washing the car. Oh and the HP+ has worked for me on track days and autoX.

I'll be making a swtich to Porterfield R4S soon and will report back.

I've been using Ultimates for the last few years. I really like them as a street pad and lapping day pad. The last couple of seasons at AutoX I think they've been losing me time as they don't bite like HP+. I just picked up some EBC Red Stuff that I'll be trying this coming season.

I was at Cal Speedway this last weekend and comming into turn 3 at 120+ using the axis ultimates was a little scarry even with sport brakes. Then again the last time I ran there I was in my spec running blues. I have ra1's for my track tire and may have just had too much tire for the pads. I could not even get my ABS to kick in. MY brakes were very soft the whole weekend.

The weird thing is that when I down shifted the brake pedal would rise and get firm. I don't understand this but that is what happened. The only thing I can think of is that I was pumping the brakes when I down shifted. It looks like I am going to have to get new pads and rotors for the track since when my 205's are gone I will be goiong 225's.

Which ones are the more "hardcore" version, the HP+ or HPS? Well I had the more track orientated version (still not a track pad though) and had very little squealing. But like Doppel said, if they squealed at all I'd wait till the last second to brake for a red light or stop sign, and it'd go away. They lasted forever and did great on the track until I started getting faster.
