I really like the set up on The Pass's car. That is exactly how I want to do mine. You do fine work.

I like them quite a bit. Comfortable and the side bolsters lock you in place.

Thanks. I consider that quite the compliment. I'm letting function dictate form on this car. So I guess that means I'll ruin that clean look at some point in the future.

I think the Blackbird Fabworx website is fine. It isn't overly cluttered and has a clean simple look.

How much do these cost? Are they SCCA certified roll bars? Will any of them work with a glass soft top? None of these questions and more are answered on the website....

Good questions. Moti builds each roll bar to the customers spec so there is no blanket answer to all of these questions. It really just depends on what you’re looking for and what you have him build.

So the best I can do is provide you with the information on my roll bar. My bar is a SCCA/NASA hybrid. The nasa requirements are a touch lighter on DOM ID/OD. This would mean that a fully nasa legal bar (that wouldn’t be SCCA legal) would be a few pounds lighter. IIRC moti said it was some where around 8-10lbs. The bar that I have purchased is an SCCA legal bar where it counts and then NASA spec tubing where it doesn’t (xbrace, door bars). Moti typically calls this a “hybrid” roll bar.

Regarding glass soft tops… My roll bar is built for a glass soft top and also a hard top. The glass soft top roll bars require a curved harness bar. Moti calls this the NB harness bar because in oem configuration the NB’s have the glass window and require this harness bar. The harness bar is a slight up charge over a traditional harness bar.

Regarding pricing… My roll bar would have come in almost exactly at the same price as a HDHCDD with door bars and shipping. I also opted to have Moti install the roll bar, harnesses and fully modify the floor boards and trans tunnel on both sides in addition to mounting the seats. This means my costs were substantially more but I feel better knowing that the safety gear was installed by someone with a much more capable hand than my own. Keep in mind that just installation on these 6 points alone is much more difficult than a typical roll bar because the interior panels need to be modified and the receiver plates for the 5th and 6th point welded in to the unibody.

The best way to get details on Moti’s work is to call him. My install was the product of about 15-20 emails and 4-5 20 minute phone calls. Now that the glow of the “new car” feeling has worn off I still feel just as positive about the experience. It was not cheap but it was refreshing doing business the way it was done years ago. Moti is truly an artist that happens to also be capable at business.

You should do his PR... I emailed him, perhaps a phone call is in order. The work i've seen done looks great, and i like the design. If i could get it for the same cost (or less) than a Hard Dog, i'd be very interested.

That is probably why he is not calling you back. Custom high end work costs more than mass produced, what you see is what you get, work.

While I think yes… Moti does prefer to do custom and involved builds with his customers for the obvious reasons… He will provide you with an off the shelf 4 point Diagonal or GT3 roll bar that won’t cost much more than a Hard Dog. I think it’s safe to say that at any price point Moti will provide you with the same customer service and attention as the big boys. When I both dropped off and picked up my car it became obvious that my car was in reality small potatoes compared to the other work he was doing. However, he still treated me as if I were his only customer.

Moti is developing his business and fortunately for him his customer service and attention to detail is available at many different levels and price points. I don’t want to continue posting here as it now sounds like I’m a shill… but after working with Moti on this project he’s ended up being a friend.

That being said… he prob needs a vendor status on this board.

I hope his business thrives. I have been very impressed with the work I have seen from him.

I said that because it irritates me when people expect small businesses that do high end custom work to have the same prices as bigger companies that mass produce a product that is not of the same quality.

I assume that was at least partially directed at me. I don't feel that boss frog or hard dog roll bars are of poor quality. I would be surprised if the blackbird parts are "higher quality." That is not a knock at blackbird, but a nod to the quality of the "mass produced" bars. I personally am not looking for some specially-designed custom-tailored bespoke roll bar. I'm perfectly happy with one welded up on a prefabbed blackbird jig. I don't find it unreasonable to hope for similar pricing for such a roll bar. He's a one man show and has very little overhead. I expect his quality to be good, his turn around time on my order to be somewhat slow, and his pricing to be competitive.

I don't think that is a ridiculous expectation.

I think the average Miata owner just needs a decent roll bar- now someone who NEEDS a cage is in a different category.

All you are doing here is scouring for cheap parts on this forum. Contribute something useful or GTFO.

Wow... Really? Excuse the f&ck out of me. And how was that not useful? Because i didn't agree with you?
And what did u do columbo, look at my posts and realize they are all about roll bars? Guess what? I'm looking to purchase a rollbar!!
I've owned my miata for 8 years, put nearly 100,000 miles on it, and i feel i could contribute a fair bit to this forum. Sorry i'm new here. I guess had I joined here in '09 like you, instead of at Miata.net back in '06 I could talk big ---- too. Huh. Guess i'll have to wait a couple years.
.... And i thought miata.net was supposed to have all the arrogant *****...

But hey, we can save our pissing match for another day. These bars look very nice. I hope he does well and i will be contacting him for a quote.

You come on here with 8 posts coming across as a douche bag. Maybe you are not a douche bag, but once you contribute something useful, we will get a better feel for what you are really about. But now, you are just a douche bag, and it does not matter how many miles you have put on your car.

I hope you prove me wrong.

I am sorry. But i honestly see no douchbaggery in my comments.

EErockMiata said his setup was comparably priced to a HDHCDD

I said i would be interested in one, if it was indeed comparably priced.

You said you were irritated by people expecting to pay comparable prices.

I explained why I felt Blackbirds products should be comparably priced, which they supposedly are.

You told me to go f*ck off.

I am labelled a douche.

Do tell.

Please read what has been written. Apparently you don't like new members because I feel that my condensed transcription of the above is very accurate. I really do apologize if somehow i offended you. But I don't feel I did anything that would upset anyone.

Hustly was one of a kind, and no matter how hard people try, they won't be able to duplicate the guy. Some of his rants had me in tears from laughter - trying to copycat him will just result in failboat 'cause if you feel the need to try to copycat, you don't have the talent to emulate him.
