minor issue with the 6UL's
I put them on Friday and had them off Monday to swap out my front rotors, discovered that the nickel "coating" where the lugs go started flaking off!! Are they really that cheaply made?? Man I miss my Panasports, they were definitely a superior wheel in build quality. Anyone else had any similar issues?
|
I'm sure you contacted Emilo before posting here right?
|
My gen 1 nickels have a lot of chips too. I am not too impressed with the finish quality on them but I love the wheels themselves. I will probably have them refinished eventually.
|
um..you're not complaining about the finishing coming off where the lug contacts the wheel, right?
I'm pretty impressed with the finish quality so far. |
I'm running the 2-piece mcgard lugs and have not had any chipping on my nickel 6uls.
|
If it's right where the lug rubs on the wheel, I would not be surprised at all, but if it's just where the socket bumps around the lug, I would say contact Emilio. My silver ones have been flawless (except when they rub, but that's not the wheel's fault)
|
Yes, they are that cheap... might as well get rid of them now before all the finish comes off. I'll give you a couple hundred bucks for them because i'll have to spend a couple hundred bucks getting them refinished.

Ding Ding Ding! Yes he is! I don't know about him but I want the paint gone there. Helps with keeping lugs torqued at the track. |
The nickel is gone where the lug contacts them on mine, which I'd say is to be expected given that it's a painted finish. It's not like you see that area when they're on the car, so who cares?

Upload a photo or two.

Mine are chipping in a lot of spots other than the lugs. Where the lugs are I would expect to chip.

Azenis. I bought them second hand for cheap enough that I didn't care about the chips. I know the previous owner and doubt he was rough enough on them to warrant the damage they have though. I really don't care for the nickel finish anyways and plan to re-do them in gunmetal w/ a machined lip like the SSR Comps they replaced.
|
Mine have a lot of chips, but they are Sav's old track wheels so it's to be expected. That said I would like info on have them redone.

It is where the lug nuts contact the wheel, otherwise they do look great and are a tad lighter. So for the cheap price I will just be careful with them and hope they last.
|
wah wah wah, my pretty wheel has a nick, wah wah wah. Its a shitbox budget gay-dude ride, not a Ferrari. If you don't like it, but Volks for 3x the price and quit crying like queers.

:magna::greddy::pitlab::ky::riaa::greddy2: This thread is full of homosexual activity. No shit the paint is going to chip off of the lug seats. If using a standard 1 piece lug, thats for the best. I use Mcgard 2 piece lugs so I don't have any loose chips stuck under the lug to worry about letting my lugs loose.
|
Yeah, mine did that too.

Assesing build quality based on paint in the lug east area is a bit of a stretch. I was a Panasport dealer for a few years. I can tell you that no finite element analysis was ever done on that classicly beautiful but very under engineered wheel. Ever wonder why they're so damn heavy? |
I vote for a panasport look-alike made by 949 that is engineered and fits big goodwin brakes.

It's intrinsically a heavy design. It would be like trying to make a 3400 lb Mustang handle like a Miata because you like the way the Mustang looks. That's not the way I'm wired. I'll concentrate on 6UL's and 6ULR's thank you. |
that's cool. but what's a 6ULR??

ahh ok. I'm very familiar with spinning from when I used to work at an architectural lighting company and all of our aluminum reflectors were made this way. It's somewhere between art and science but yields a very clean chuck-side shape.

I actually agree with Hustler on this one. It's not like you are paying mega bux for these wheels.

Many of the gen I's (discontinued in September '08) had paint in the lug seat that would sometimes chip on the nickels. The Gen II's very specifically have no paint in lug seat area for that reason. There is a long list of changes between the gen I and gen II. Tiny details, some major differences. Many of which I never mention until someone asks or brings up a concern about the discontinued version. I'm guessing you have some of the discontinued Gen I's. Did you buy them new or used?

I had some of the rarest Panasports ever sold in the US, so I guess my expectations were a bit on the high side with the 6UL's. My apologies if I got anyone's panties in a bunch. |
