MSM Differenetial
So I have this 3.63 gear set I've been wanting to put in the car for a while, and there's a local guy with a $1000 MSM diff-and-axels. Should I think about getting this? My current idea was to put the 3.6's in there, put the 3.9's out of it into my current torsen (so I wouldn't have to be down as long) and then sell that to someone with a 5 speed as it would make an awesome gearing.....
Is that dumb, will I just lose a pile of money doing this and gain little-to-nothing? |
IIRC, msm axles are a whooping 2mm bigger. Most don't break axles though.
I'll take the 3.63's though for free if you can't get rid of them. :) |
The LSD in the MSM is nice for a daily driver. The TorsenII is better for autocross. Both are fine and neither seems more durable than the other.
$1k is kind of high. |
Er, I have the torsen (I think) in the '00. Any idea which one it is, and what it's "good" for?
Sounds like all I'd be getting is bigger axels, and it's only real value would be the 3.9's I could resell. |
My question would be if the actual c-v joints themselves are bigger/beefier/stronger than regular axles. Cause the 2mm extra doesn't really matter. Axles don't break there. No idea about any torsen. I want a Rx7 lsd.

Factory 3.9 final drive diffs are TorsenII. Hence my very specific reply regarding TorsenII.
Not sure if the MSM has different CV joints, that's a great question. The MSM does have different U joints on the driveshaft (they're replaceable). |
Abe should go "look" at the MSM setup for sale and mike out the axles and CV joints.
Never knew the MSM had a serviceable drive shaft. Is it the same dimensions as a regular one? Or perhaps beefier as well? (not that stock drive shafts are known to fail, just curious) |
Yeah - I'm after "Your car will be more reliable" or "You could swap out the good parts and make money selling the rest"
Instead it's sounding like "You could spend a grand and try not to hate yourself". :-) |
for a grand, why not find a cheap carrier, KAAZ or MAAZdaspeed diff, and do that?

Matt: Yeah, I've got a torsen, and the gears I want. I'll just keep it.
