My car sounds like a metronome

Hey Guys,

Im just looking to get some input from those with more experience than me. I've looked around and can't seem to find any threads/info/videos that list symptoms exactly like this. I haven't had an opportunity to look underneath yet as this started happening as i was driving to put her in storage. The thumping started soft...i turned down the radio to make sure i wasn't just hearing things...5 minutes later it wasn't drive-able.
The thumping increases in speed relative to acceleration. it also occurs going in reverse. The thumping you hear in the video is me going 5 mph.

I have no idea how to post a video so im hoping this youtube link to video will work.

rod knock/spun bearing

aidandj 03-16-2016 05:09 PM

Something broken in the drivetrain. Too slow to be rod knock. Does it increase with revs or wheel speed.

Rod knock would follow revs but not wheel speed.

Not rod knock, too tinny/hollow. IMO, based on speed and tempo, that's a fully fucked u-joint in the driveshaft.

aidandj 03-16-2016 06:14 PM

Oooh, thats a good one.

I'd also put $1 on a broken u-joint. Something like i found looking under my truck a few months ago

Thanks for all the input!

Yea it increases with wheel speed.
Could it be inner cv joints? I know both of my inner cv boots are torn and need replacing. Jabroni before me had it slammed, i suspect that caused it

aidandj 03-16-2016 07:19 PM

Yes, could be that

tehzack 03-18-2016 09:40 AM

Not to oversimplify the issue, but have you made sure your wheels are tight? I had a similar sound on the way home from work yesterday because my LR wheel was about to escape. Stupid HF torque wrench, can't trust 2 year old Chinese kids to make anything anymore.

Thats a good idea, i'll check the lug nuts, but i have a feeling it wont be something so simple. I'm not that lucky lol

Driveshaft is also easy as hell to replace. Its 4 bolts and nuts and then just slides out. May have to remove the exhaust to make room depending on what you have installed.

SOLVED! Finally got to my storage building with a jack and started poking and prying. My joints and CV axles were all fine....so per TehZacks suggestion i checked the lugs... sure enough lol front left were wicked loose. Thanks for the suggestion bud.

You're quite welcome. Glad you caught it before the wheel made a break for freedom.

loose lug nuts...good catch

Had that happen years ago after picking a car up from a transmission shop, scary to think what the outcome could have been.
