NC Xida Development

We have been working on these for over a year now. Very close to production now. Single adjustable only, available with Street or Race spring pack, same shocks. Inverted rear with proprietary mount. They will be available exclusively through Goodwin Racing. We bought an NC2 a while back as a test mule, Kaiko. If you will be attending Miata Reunion at Laguna Seca this weekend, Goodwin Racing will be giving rides in Kaiko on the perimeter roads with the Touring spring pack.

Very cool design, Emilio. Boats need to handle well, too.

Looks like my Koni Yellows in the NC may have numbered days.

Pic from last week, just as we rolled out to Miata Reunion at Laguna Seca. Between the Brian, Ryan and our guys, we gave lots of rides in Kaiko. As usual, passengers were really surprised at how it soaked up everything yet still held the body tight when chucking into bumpy turns.

I got to take a ride in Kaiko with the NC Xidas late Sunday at Laguna after things calmed down a bit. I don't want to appear too biased, but the extra travel available compared to almost every other NC coilover is immediately noticeable over mid corner bumps at even moderate "Enthusiast street" pace.

I can't wait for these to drop. I think my "last BP engine ever" crusade will be solved with a 2.5/e85/Xida equipped NC3.

HarryB 10-17-2019 03:51 PM

Fun (and somewhat unrelated) fact; Kaiko reminds me of kaiki, which is a traditional Greek wooden fishing boat. Hard to find a more fitting name for a NC.

That sounds dope.

Kaiko is Japanese for "you're fired". Inside joke.

turbofan 10-17-2019 05:02 PM

...But a happy coincidence that it's *almost* a greek wooden fishing boat.

Have to admit, the idea has its appeal. NC1 has so much better NVH refinement than any NB, and is yards cheaper than even the scruffiest ND. NC1's are dirt cheap now, NC2's reasonable. NC3's still pricey enough to be compared to ND1's and the ND1 is a better car IMO.
I don't need another car but I can see where an 2.5 swapped NC1 or NC2 makes a lot of sense for fun to dollar ratio.

Precisely where I'm at. 2.5/E85/XIDA, throw in some sticky 235/40/17s. I know it's popular to hate on the NC, but I had one as a DD for awhile. I threw an OFT tune on it, it was fantastic to throw around on the street, and was just nice enough to not feel like an NA penalty box.

E, are you doing sways too? Or just the shock/spring/mount combo? RX-8 sways maybe? Just curious if you had given any thought/testing to that as well.

Uncle Hoonsalot 10-18-2019 10:23 AM

This definitely makes doing stupid stuff to my NC more tempting. As-is, it did remarkably well at our last local autocross - 2nd RAW time by a talented driver (not me) on Koni Yellows, Cobalt springs and sways, and 225 Conti ECS.

A 2.5 with cams and E85 plus Xidas would be pretty fantastic. And Goodwin has X10s that will fit under stock body now...

EDIT: just realized I'd already expressed excitement for these like 5 posts above in this thread. Whaddyagonnado.

Nope, just shocks. Goodwin already has a line of sway bars for the car and they will be the exclusive source for our NC Xida. Part of the Xida development process is doing track testing with a variety of different spring rates and sway bars. We invited the Goodwin crew for a test day and of course they provide the modified NC.

We may end up making some generalizations and recommendations but we are really relying on Goodwin to communicate and coach people on setting up their Xida equpped NC. So, short answer; no we won't be doing a deep dive into all that is NC.

Somewhat related and worth clarifying.

These are designed for the NC, so what limitations and/or down-sides would there be to use these on a RX8?

Dunno. Haven't researched that. I suppose someone very familiar with the differences between the NC and RX8 would know would to look for. Basic config is the same so they might adapt.

Edit: It occurs to me that Goodwin would probably have a precise answer. I'll point them to this thread.

We jumped into our first NC in late 2005 (model year 2006) directly from two years of racing an RX8, and knowing the NC was a chopped RX8 chassis the first thing we did was toss a bunch of our used RX8 bits into the NC and head for the track. That included a set of our 'RX8' coilovers into the NC. Fronts are the same specs, RX8 rear coilovers normally slightly longer than what the NC wants to accept, but going the other direction from NC designed coilovers into RX8 should be no issue.

Excited to get the XIDAS into our Budget NC Project shown above. Three super fun days in this project last weekend at Laguna Seca Raceway, junkyard Mazda6 2.5 liter motor and our new 17x10 NC Race wheels, right about 200 hp at ground makes an entertaining high grip Miata.

NC are indeed stupid cheap currently, we got this latest NC project for 5k including a new top, Emilio got Kaiko for about the same money. Hungry to get the race spring XIDAS in this project along with a budget NC turbo kit for 2.5 motors that's coming soon. We foresee a lot of NC hotrods coming, the cost is so reasonable, and there is so much we can do with them!

I think so too. Used value is now in the sweet spot where one can justify tearing into a scruffy project car to make a sweetheart HPDE/autocross toy. We had all hoped the S2000 would turn out like this but the price curve went the other way. The NC, with your 2.5 swap is right there with the very best fun/dollar ratio projects like an NA/NB with K24Z3 swap, C5Z street car or early 86.

2.5, Xidas, 10's.

That's a $15k build that will do 1:57's at Buttonwillow on street tires. Nutty.
Feels the same as our old Rental recipe of NB2, Square top, I/H/E, ECU, Xidas, 9's.. only faster.
