noise

Ok, i just got my car. Really started to notice it on the way home, the trans is a bit noisy but nothing too noticeable because with the radio on it was hard to distinguish. My supra i used to own was noisy because of a lack of sound deadening between the trans and cabin. The miata is loud in every gear and i was wondering if that would be normal, since the previous owner told me there was a shield between the trans and body that he left out when he did the clutch job recently. Does that sound about right? is whatever shield should be above the trans used for sound deadening as well?
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

I am suprised you can hear all that over the screching tires while your drifting.

drifter2be 01-21-2010 02:50 AM

no, no, no, never drift a car you just bought. lol. Though with all the rain we've been getting in socal i spent the last two days getting some enjoyment out of the Supra before getting rid of it, love the wet weather because theres so little tire wear. but thats off point. lol.

part of me is wondering if its possibly noisy because he could have put the wrong fluid in it when he did the clutch job. Was gonna do all the service work on the car tomorrow anyway since its a new vehicle. Just rack it at work and do oil, rotate, coolant trans and diff services, check brakes, bearing, etc.

Also, now that im thinking about it, there was also a slight whine coming from the rear of the car between 40-45 mph, thinking it could be carrier bearings making noise in the differential, or possibly a wheel bearing, have to check that out tomorrow too.

Heat shields are for the exhaust, there's nothing between the transmission tunnel and transmission. Take the center console off and make sure you have insulation underneath the center console and above the shifter boots. Check both shifter boots and make sure theres no tears in the rubber. I'm guess there are.

lol, you were dead on about the boots being torn, i was underneath it today checking out how bad this car needs work and the rubber around the base of the shifter is pretty much gone. Do i need to go to mazda for that or can it be picked up aftermarket?

I think only mazda, but you can order them online.

Or you could pay less and get them here:Finish Line / Rosenthal Mazda Parts & Accessories*::*Miata / MX-5*::*Drive Train*::*Shift Boot Large Upper

If your car is a 1.6 the rear diffs are junk. You will need a 1.8 diff to handle any power.

curly 01-21-2010 09:55 PM

I meant to mention that place but always forget the name.

drifter2be 01-23-2010 09:36 PM

yeah, the differential was already on the list of upgrades before i even drove the car. lol. Right now I'm now dealing with a coolant leak behind the engine. It doesnt seem to be the so called "cursed plug" that i've read about online, it got worse after replacing the heater hoses, and im thinking i may not have gotten the clamp behind the engine tight enough because of the messed up access to it. Im gonna pull the coil off tomorrow to get to it easier.
