NOOB Needs New Brakes
 
A guy on this forum is selling 1.8 stuff. I've read that's a good swap for us 1.6 guys. But, the pads are track pads. If he will sell me just rotors, brackets, etc. should I pick these up with some Axxis ULTS?

It's my DD that I hope will see some autocross/track time. More than anything I just need new brakes. They were squealing while pulling into work this morning, wasn't even braking.

Or, would something like this suffice? These rotors Cryo-Stop Rotor with Axxis ULTs?

Also, if anyone has reviews on eBay drilled/slotted w ceramic pads, let me know. http://www.ebay.com/itm/FRONT-REAR-C...8d6cc7&vxp=mtr Maybe this deal is too good to be true? I mean, come on, TOMMY BOY!!

Well if it comes with race pads and you want to track it at some point, just buy some DD pads now and use the track pads when you go to the track.

Track pads don't have expiration dates so just hang on to them. One day you might be happy to have them

The Carbotech pads are driveable on the street and will not eat your rotors if you do so. They will dust a lot, and possibly squeak a bit, but functionally they will be just fine.

Edit: I dailied on XP8's for 3 years.

Since they are Carbotech pads, if you do go those route and want more "streetable" pads, you should use the Carbotech 1521's. Carbotech pads need to have their transfer layer, and only their transfer layer, on the rotors or they don't work properly. The 1521's are completely compatible with the XP* pads and you'll be able to swap back and forth at will without destroying the transfer layer.

They guy selling this is out of town till the 21st. I need brakes NOW.

Been reading on forums and spec miata guys run NAPA rotors just fine, and actually prefer them. Should I just do NAPA rotors and good pads for a quick, painless, efficient fix?

If so, what pads? Ive read good stuff ab Axxis ULTs, but some say they are hard to find. Or, Hawk HPS. If you guys are recommending any, will you do me a favor and place a link to a reputable site to buy them from?

Napa rotors are fine, I used them. I've always used Carbotechs, so I don't know any of the other pads, so can't make a recommendation there.

I'm fairly happy with my HPS pads. Very streetable and fine for autocross. I started to experience some fade I wasn't the most comfortable with during an HPDE though. Problem is I've never run any other pads on the track so I don't have a good point of comparison on that front.

Carbotech's website says they DO NOT recommend 1521s for track use, and then as you read other descriptions they dont recommend (xp8,xp10) for daily driving. Do they not have a dual-duty pad?

There is no such thing as a dual-duty pad.

However.

It is completely plausible to drive XP8's, XP10's on the street. They will dust and dust and dust. In the summer mine would squeal. But they will not destroy the rotors, which a lot of race pads will do (since on the street all of the stopping is with cold rotors/pads, and most race pads eat rotors under those conditions).

They are not "recommended for street use" because of these considerations. Someone looking to buy street pads is not going to want to have to wash their wheels every two days. And they will not want the squealing. However, if you know and understand that they will dust a lot and possibly squeal, it's fine to DD them.

The 1521's have a higher heat tolerance/range than most street pads but are still not track pads. They will overheat.

I get a discount at NAPA. Is it possible to just throw some pads on now to hold me over till i can get the 1.8 brakes from the user selling his? As in, if I get just some DD pads for my 1990, will those pads transfer over to the 1.8 brakes, and I can swap in the carbotechs when I go to the track?

Read Carbotech's instructions about their pads. If you go this route you will need to clean off the pre-existing transfer layer from the other brake pads. I have always started with fresh rotors.

You can legitimately DD a Carbotech XP-series pad. They will dust like nothing you've ever imagined before, but they won't eat rotors and the dust isn't corrosive. Nancy-boy websites that don't actually test the products they sell won't tell you this, obviously.

Hawk HP+ are excellent track and street pads as long as little dust and noise are OK
