Power steering rack

Does anyone know if I can move the fitting for the pressure line on the rack itself? I need to move the bigger block looking fitting, it interferes with the oil pan. I would guess if I cut the block off and capped it I could just drill a new hole in the front of the rack, weld on new fitting and profit?

I have had several racks open and the only reason I could see you couldn't move it is that right now it's at the highest point and therefore the system can self bleed as it should.

If you rotate it around to the front side of the rack then air will likely become trapped above that opening on that side of the piston. Maybe if you capped that top hole with a bleed screw you could bleed it later. It'd be a mess but an option I guess.

The square block that I am wanting to move would be at a 6 or 9 o’clock position depending on how you look at it. The other fitting on the rack wouldn’t be moved and that one is at like a 1 or 11 o’clock position. So that would still be the highest point in the rack since I don’t have to mess with that one

One line applies pressure on one side of the piston, one line applies pressure to the opposite side. The two do not cross over. If the two crossed over all the time, you would not have hydraulic power assist because you'd have identical pressure on either side of the piston.

The prop valve in the stem of the rack decides which side gets more pressure based upon you turning the steering column with the steering wheel.

Both lines are placed on the "top" side of the rack so each fluid reservoir on either side of the piston can self-bleed.

I understand how it works. But the fittings are not directly on top of the rack. The fitting that is at an angle is fine. The second fitting in this picture, the square one, it is at a horizontal position and that’s the one I need to relocate the front of the rack

I see no reason why not.
