Proper Bedding-in Procedure

Pretty well known already, but since I just finished upgrading the brakes I wanted to double check and bed them in properly..

Figured I'd share, and be the 1st thread in our long awaited Susp/Brakes section...;)

Pretty much sums it up, but feel free to comments, add-on, etc....

Not gonna read but tell me if Chad was right "Drive up to 80mph and slam on the brakes. repeat a couple of times but let the brakes cool before you stop".

I vaguely remember a study that said once you touch your brakes, even backing out of the driveway, bedding loses effectiveness. This may have been for "street comfort", however.

I personally do the old GM method, 10x 30mph-1mph. Note that if you have stock 1.6 brakes, stopping from 60mph more than twice in a row will most likely overheat your braking system and cause injury or death.

Its not that long if u scroll down..

But basically
-60-10mph moderate pedal effort (x10)
-15min cool down w/ ideally no braking (ie: highway cruise)
-60-10mph hard braking (x10)
-15min cool down w/ ideally no braking (ie: highway cruise)
-Park car (no e-brake) for approx 24hrs

Lots of variations, but basically go fast and almost stop several times..then let sit

The idea is that you need to lay a transfer layer between the pads and the rotors, and you need to heat the pads so that all the manufacturing oil and shit comes out.

What I always do is get up to speed (50-60) and slow down to about 10 repeatedly for about 5-6 times each time increasing pedal pressure. Works so far.

great info. i always fuck up a set of pads...

I think I fucked up mine the other day. I was doing repeated 60-~5mph stops, but I didn't do the moderate to hard transition, and after the 8th one I was in a cloud of smoke, and then I noticed that the smoke was still coming off after I stopped, as if they were on fire, so I just got back in and drove.

I think I need to re-bleed the system, because the pedal feel has gone kind of squishy again.

My HPS did that after I was finished with the last of the hard stops...they work fine?

Well I did the procedure as posted, and it seems all is perfect.
Had the usual smell start around 1.2 way thru the first set of stops, by the end of the 1st set had white smoke, but thats a good thing (so long as it goes away).
After the 15min cool down, my first few on the next set felt alot better already, had a lil more smoke, but much less... Cooled again for 15min, and then let sit overnight.

Proud to report the brakes work great. IMO this method has proven itself to me...
