Re-use FM Level 1 Pressure Plate
 

I only had about 3000miles on my FlyinMiata Level 1 clutch/pressure plate when I killed my factory spec engine shortly after installing my BNR upgraded 16G MSM turbo. The clutch never slipped or gave me any issues. The old disk measures 7.9mm thick which seams very little wear from the 8.0mm I measured when installing the clutch. Even still I will at least be installing a new clutch disk with the new forged VVT engine since I am planning on running up to 300ftlb, close to the 318ftlb limit that FM publishes for the Level 1 clutch.

Will it be OK to re-use the pressure plate? It looks good to me. No heat spots from slipping or anything bad. Most of the surface still has the machining rings on it. Anyone have experience re-using a pressure plate with this low miles on it?

FWIW, FM seems to rate their clutches as measured by the engine not at the wheels. When people dyno tune their cars that is at the wheel. FM clutches have been known to slip at quite a bit lower torque than advertised. I hear the supermiata clutch is the way to go now and those are rated in WTQ values. Food for thought;

Funny story. I had a Supermiata clutch that slipped prior to reaching the advertised torque capacity. I did not have that issue with the FM Level 1 and ended up running a lot more torque than the Supermiata clutch which it replaced. I wish that wasn't the case because the Supermiata is a lot cheaper than the FM.

Different experiences then. My experience with an FM1 was similar to andym, started slipping far below 318ftlbs. Went with ACT in my case.

Love all the whining about FM clutches. I wonder how often it is due to contamination? I have reused my FM 2 clutch pressure plate and disk many times now, it has never slipped. I even limped home from the track on this disk once in 4th, when it was the only gear still working. It's a little thin but still holding strong. That being said I always clean the surfaces with brake clean prior to final assembly, a must for trouble free clutching.

Ive reused an FM1 pressure plate with significantly more miles with no issues. Pushed 240tq though it until the motor blew some time later. Im no expert but Im sure that pressure plate would be fine with a can of brake clean

How firm is your pedal on the FM 2? If I end up getting another clutch kit instead of just a disk I am considering the FM for extra insurance.

I bought a used FM1 disc and plate on my old 1.6, worked fine. I still have it, pretty sure it's going into a buddies car at some point. I see no reason not to reuse the plate, or the disc...

For my new NB I got a FM2, no regrets. If I drive a normal Miata now I can't for a minute, stock clutches are too damn vague.
