Rear driver side problems!!

Finally have given up and resorted coming here. Can't find anything on the forums about this.

Noise only happens when I aggressively make the car bounce up and down at a stop.

While driving, noise happens when I make a complete stop, then take off from first gear and does it very frequent with a passenger (more weight)

Noise does not occur over speed bumps. (Weird?)

After driving for 1+ hour, then turn off the car and wait 10 minutes, a loud pop will occur from the area. Then the noise won't come back.

This is a 97 Miata, driver rear side.

Sway bar looks good, coils are fairly new. No idea what this could be. Maybe upper control arm?

Check your hardware. I'd start with the shock mounting bolt and the nut on the top of he shaft inside of the trunk.

Have them all torqued to spec, ill double check again, maybe they loosened up?

It sounds like its coming from right underneath the trunk but not actually inside the trunk

If you say underneath the trunk (area) and a loud pop after driving for awhile, my first thought is exhaust related. Broken Hanger, heat shield, something. I'd check the entire system all the way to the manifold.

You should get a bigger car or a room for that activity.

rocker1337 06-21-2014 02:02 AM

Haha actually the car is fine for that. Shes 5'4" and im 5'7".... so we use the passenger seat.... which doesnt explain the driver side noise right?

Diff mounts tight as well? The two little nuts that hold the diff mount cover plate thingy too.
Sub-frame mounts tight?

The only after run movement you should have is from the fuel tank. Expansion and contraction and what have ya. Could be the fill tube mount in the fender or a tank mount.

Baffle in exhaust cracked or rusted, maybe. Is there a bolt on exhaust hanger?

It is the dark for which I'm stabbing.

Recommend you get someone to help you. Have them rock the car while you get up close and personal with areas of the rear suspension/exhaust/trunk. I've had strange suspension clunks that turned out to be an internally broken shock -- so it may take some real detective work.

Loud pop says to me something is binding under load, and releasing after it sits.

Endlinks? Sway in the mount? Coil binding in tophat?

rocker1337 06-21-2014 03:05 PM

sway looks good, end links are new and super tight. Im starting to think it may be the something to do with the top hat. I know the top hat screw is on tight but it may be something else

DaveC 06-21-2014 07:25 PM

What kind of shocks are those?

rocker1337 06-22-2014 12:57 AM

Theyre megan streets coilovers

rocker1337 06-22-2014 12:58 AM

UPDATE: I rose the car up about 1/4" of an inch higher. The sound is much quieter and doesnt happen as frequent anymore. Im thinking the coilover is bad?

hornetball 06-22-2014 12:16 PM

Megans are bad when new. LOL.
