I made a video before i changed the diff
So today I changed out the factory 4:30 Torsen to a 4:10 open diff Here is what I found https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1389235245 https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1389235245 https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1389235245 https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1389235245 All the pieces have those groves in it. Anyone know what they are part of? https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1389235245 |
The pieces kind of look like a splined part.
Also holy suspension droop batman. |
Post a closer shot of the broken diff, and the bits, too.

Ok I will have to take some tomorrow when I could use a better camera By the way I bought my 93 race car at Colorado Springs |
An '04 would not have a Torsen, but have a Tochigi-Fugi, which is a cone type LSD. The grooved pieces are parts of the cones.

Differential Spotters Guide I've seen anecdotal evidence that the typical independent brake testing done on a roller , (where you have the roller spin the rear wheels and you apply the brakes/handbrake. The roller reduces pressure on one side or the other or both to test brake balance and effectiveness of the rear brakes), for MOT tests in the UK are very good at causing this type of damage. If you have something similar in the US it may be the cause. |
going to an open is sad...

Props to EricJ for the info.

TOCHIGI-FUJI IS THE BEST DIFF
(at least mine is) |

Just saw this thread and wanted to comment.
I had the same issue last spring, went to change the diff oil and pieces of the cone came out. Ended up putting a torsen into it. The guy that did the work for me said that it looked like the gears tried to eat some of the parts that we're moving around with the oil. Fingers crossed that the new setup holds up. I searched online for other posts on this type of failure but your is the first I have seen. My car was never raced or tracked in any way, I did have some tire hop in the wet with the oem tires. Any idea on what happened to your? |
