Rebuilding 6 speed gearbox

I can pick up a 6 spd box in trade for some extra parts I had, but the box has no 1st gear. I'm told 2-6 and reverse are like buttah. I've not cracked it open. Problem could be as "simple" to fix as replacing the 1st gear or counter gear (I'm betting it is).

Anyone been inside a 6 spd box? The diagrams look more complicated in the 6 compared to the 5.

I'll buy it from him if you dont want it.

Abe is doing one in his garage right now. Check w/ him.

does it not just go into gear? the 99 5spd trans that i have in my car now had "no reverse" took it appart, found the smallest broken off part of the brass syncro ring to be broken off and locking the gear out from being in, took it apart, cleaned it up good as new! might turn out to be the deal of the century

I have no idea. Owner said first is no good, didn't elaborate. He's also yet to bring me the shifter so...

thymer 09-17-2008 08:30 AM

I found a six speed from a wrecked 2004 MSM in Texas. On a truck to me now. No shifter though, can one "persuade" a 5 spd shifter to work?

UrbanSoot 09-20-2008 11:43 PM

6 speed shifter is different from 5 speed. you can just buy short throw shifter as it will be new, easy to install, and will also work great too.

UrbanSoot 09-20-2008 11:43 PM

ben, wanna trade that '99 head you owe me for that tranny? ;) i need one BAD!

hackerchris 09-21-2008 08:11 AM

Ben, what would you say if I told you I just "happen to have" the physical copy of the 6 speed transmission manual that Mazda mechanics use to learn on working on the 6 speed transmission when in training, and it has real pictures, not diagrams, of every part, and full, easy explanations of what to do step by step?

Ben 09-25-2008 09:45 AM

Chris--hook a brotha up. Like for serious.

hackerchris 09-25-2008 11:17 AM

I get out of school at 2:45 pm. I can make a pdf book out of it if you sell your "turbo consulting soul" to me. ;)

hackerchris 10-01-2008 11:59 AM

Alright Ben, I made the entire manual into a PDF. I uploaded it and here is a link: http://www.megaupload.com/?d=GYWU1YBP

Thank you, that is very very cool. Now HTF do I d/l it? Do I need to sign up an account with this host?

hackerchris 10-01-2008 12:09 PM

No, you should look at the top right and it asks you to put 3 letters or numbers or whatever are in the picture displays in the box and then click download. If you can't figure it out in like 3 seconds of looking at it I will make another download link for you.

They seem more complicated than they really are. I read a book on automatics and then rebuilt one. They seem super complicated at first, but they aren't that bad. You just take it apart and lay everything out so that you can reassemble it exactly the way it came apart. Pretty straight forward actually. FWIW, I built 30' of 2' deep shelves and put everything in a line as it came apart. Made it easy to put back together. And manuals are less critical, but on autos you don't want a spec of trash in them. I'd say get a good parts washer at least to clean parts before final assembly.

Quite a few mexicans at the farms locally, and at Scott's Processing (only place in the whole country that makes pipes for nuclear plants), glad they trust mexicans with melt-down reactor safety. ;)

Think of it as a level 10 puzzle... But without the need for glue. Or an Xacto knife. If you have the proper documentation, taking that thing apart and putting it back together is going to be a breeze. I've worked on a couple Auto's. Try figuring out why a pump isn't bolting in and then breaking the body because you had a washer in the wrong spot (DOH!).

Whoa, kick ass service manual. Thanks Chris.

hackerchris 10-01-2008 02:08 PM

Took me forever to make, but I think it came out nicely. There are a few notes on certain pages to help with things. You're very welcome Ben, I hope you make good use of it, because that is better than the manual the dealerships have. And this training manual isn't something I know anyone else has besides myself. :)

Flippy02 10-01-2008 04:42 PM

i think it should be put up for forum use, if that would please everyone.
