Are RX-7 and Miata axle seals the same?
Over the weekend I swapped in a 94+ diff with RX-7 aluminum housing and clutch type LSD. I made sure to use the axle C-clips from the RX-7 stub shafts on the 99 axles I used. When I installed them I made sure the locked in and did not pull out of the diff. I drove my car 50 miles back from my friend’s house and I noticed that the axle seals are leaking a lot. I did not install new seals at the time because there were none available at the time of the swap and I forgot to order some. I’m guessing its leaking because I used old seals but are there any differences between RX-7 seals and Miata?

my driver side will never stop leaking. i was exicted when i swapped over to a new housing and i decided to keep the existing seals in place...suffice to say the driver side still leaks :vash:
i believe the diff seals are the same...not certain, i know they are $6.95 (84-85 rx7 non-turbo) |
The seals are not the same. When I did my RX-7 aluminum housing diff swap a few years back, I bought both seals because I wasn't sure which I'd need. Ended up using Miata '95.5+, one-piece half-shafts, so I used the Miata seals, and I've never had any leaks.
I've since swapped in a Torsen front-end to the diff., re-used my old Miata half-shaft seals, and still have no leaks. |
wow Brian, long time no see.

Well I ordered some new seals from Finshline and they should be here Monday which is too bad because I was hoping to go to New England drag strip this weekend. Oh well.
