rx7 gear sets
 

I have been looking for info on some thing I have read some were but can’t find any more. They talked about how the gears from one of the rx7 transmission work inside the Miata transmission so you would have a stronger transmission but not have to fab any thing but just to put the gears in the Miata transmission. Any one read or knows any thing about this?

yaa i did but all i found was the whole trany swap im looking for were they kept the stock mx 5 case stock clutch and drive shaft and all they did was put rx7 gears in the mx5 case

Modifying Mazda Transmissions

So here are the general processes to regearing your tranny. If you want to keep your stock B2200 tranny but change 5th gear, you simply dissassemble both transmissions down to 5th gear and swap the gears. If you want a stock Miata, 626, MX6, etc.. tranny you take the bell housing and tail housing off the doner tranny and put the truck housings on, now it should bolt right in. To get 1st through 4th gears from a RWD 626 and 5th from an RX-7 you swap the 626 bell housing for the one on your truck, then you would strip the 626 housing down to 5th gear and put the RX-7 gear set in. After that you might be able to use the 626 tailshaft or you might have to use the truck tailshaft. Currently I am working on putting a full Series 5 tranny in my truck, the tranny is in great shape so all I have to do is bolt the B2200 bell housing on, adapt the rear tranny mount and move my shifter back 2 inches and its all set. 2nd gen RX-7 TII trannies have a better synchronizer design and beefier output shaft, it would require your truck bell housing and a custom made driveshaft using the TII yoke. The shifter location would also have to be moved in your truck because the truck tail housing would not fit with the output shaft being larger.

Yes, if you wish to run an RX7 transmission take the bell housing, tail housing, and shifter feet off both transmissions. Place you're miata housings and shifter feet on the RX-7 transmission and bolt it back in. Be careful on the input shaft, some are longer or shorter but should interchange without any problems.

I am currently running a miata transmission in my Mazda B2200, I got tired of shadow boxing running the stock tranny after I installed a 9 lb flywheel. lol.

I don't think I have a write-up on Mazdatruckin yet but if you're capable of installing a transmission then it isn't difficult to do the swap. There are snap rings which lock the input shaft bearings. Those will have to be removed to get the bell housing off. I highly recommend spending $30 and getting some metal, threaded rod, and a nut that fits on the rod to make a puller for the bell housing. Just make it so that it bolts on either side of the housing and then tighten the threaded rod against the input shaft to pull it off. Hitting on the bell housing to get it off often brinells the bearing races and you will get a growling noise from the transmission when driving.

Wait Wait... so why do so many people who do RX7 trans swaps do all of this welding and junk? Im trying to recall if the PPF bolts to the tail, or the center section of the trans. If this is the case I may just do this instead of 6 speed. Wish I had kept that Turbo II trans I let go a few months ago.

The trany you’re thinking of is the rx7 3 gen witch has the type r trany the older rx7 had the type 2 and type r. all the parts from the type m are interchangeable. For the ppf no need to fab it if you stick with the type 2 trany because you have to use your Miata tail housing and bell housing. Got to love Mazda for making every thing interchangeable witch also cuts production coasts and also the coast for us who want to make under 500whp I know people with rx7 making 450whp in the 2 gen model and that car is heavier then a Miata so we should have no problem with doing this. The other thing is it will bring the gears closer and make the rpm in 5th gear lower witch I know every one wants. With the 4.10 or 4.30 the car should be a torque monster AKA drag monster. But don’t use any type 2 tranys made before 1985 there weaker then the ones in the Miatas.

The type 2 is also known as a type m trany too.

so look for a 86 to 91 trany out of a rx7 but make sure its the type 2 or type m it will look like this.

i just pick up a 89 na rx7 trany for a 150 bucks shipped off ebay ill make a thread of the swap once it gets here.
