FoilSimE Beta Version 1.5a

Remember, you do NOT have 100 sq feet of airfoil. And the angle of attack can be negative.

Very fun to play with.

Cool!

It sure doesn't like any AOA over 10 degress, lol.

Wish it had information on drag. Be nice to play with the compromise between downforce and drag.

Depends on the set up. On my first test case of 1.5x6 foot....16* was the best.

I can't find it now, but I did see a project some kids did to model this. Of course, it comes down to the track. The more help you need turning at mid speed, the worse off you are in a straight line.

This very rapidly gets to good software or a wind tunnel or both, but it's fun to play with, when you see the ricer kids drifing at 20 mph with a 115 lb spoiler on their car. The way I see it, that's 115 lbs of "downforce" they didn't have before. :-)

Oh, yeah, that's the basic version. You can get more advanced ones. I saw a couple.. none had drag but with the name you should be able to find more.

FoilSimU Beta Version 1.5a

They do have CL at least on here, instead of lift

AbeFM 09-05-2009 03:20 PM

wow, if you really warp it, you can get 275 lbs at 60 mph with a tinsy baby wing of 1.5 feet x 4 feet. This scales RAPIDLY with speed, at 100 mph it's 750 lbs. That's a 60% increase in weight on the rear axel, that's SIGNIFICANT.

Of course, it's a pretty extreme shape but hey...

Oh, and at 131 mph, if you had one on front and one on back and no other aero effects (lifting body ignored in other words) you could pull 1 g, i.e. do the drive upside down thing. :-) Did I mention this ignores lifting effects?

I remember playing with this program way back in primary school. It's been around for quite some time!

Cool. Some of the # are staggering as the wing gets bigger. No wonder planes fly. lol
