Im going to bring it to school and weld it back then LPI it for cracks with the zyglo we have at school then im going to weld some gussets were this thing broke.

Is this a comment place for these to brake and also any reason why they brake? I was only on 5 psi when this broke coming off a stop sign.

My only guess would be excessive wheel hop causing too much stress.

no wheel hop just got on it half throttle and 5psi then snap.

They're manufactured to break there, hence the little notch. Common breaking point.

I know this is rocket surgeon shit, but did you let it wheel-hop ever?

falcon 05-28-2011 05:14 PM

lol.

Solid diff mounts FTW.

Did the diff come out of a car that was involved in a big frontal wreck? If you just got the diff from a dismantler, and it came from a car that was wrecked in the front, I bet it was cracked when you put it in.

The only way those things break is from big frontal impacts, or slamming the PPF over curbs over and over again.

FYI, the 2nd gen N/A FC housings bolt right up and don't have that little notch. You just have to use a Miata bushing set.

miatamike203 05-28-2011 11:30 PM

I got the diff from sixshooter.

Im looking for one of those housings for now but im going to fix mine at school and beef it up.

nitrodann 05-29-2011 12:28 AM

Dam, Mine hopped a lot till I changed engine and diff mounts.
4th gear clutch kicks in the wet in a straight line (N/A) it still hops, 3rd is ok though.

To no ones surprise I have 4 Broken 1.6 diffs in the shed.

I would think without the ppf it'd break at that point very easily. The PPF keeps is stable and straight, so I can definitely see it breaking at that weak spot.

miatamike203 05-29-2011 10:00 PM

I fixed everything today im going to have pics on how i fixed it tomorrow when i go to put it in.

rider384 05-29-2011 11:16 PM

As Dustin said, I would not be surprised if it broke again without the PPF in there.

falcon 05-29-2011 11:23 PM

LS1 FD guys seem to not have issues nixing the PPF when they go LS1. Although they do add a new brace.

miatamike203 05-30-2011 10:36 AM

Im going to have pic of the what i did to fix the broken diff.

y8s 05-30-2011 03:20 PM

I'm going to post this piece of advice again:

If you dont want the diff to break at the notch, grind the material on the sides of the notch so it's a smooth curve instead of a sharp notch.

miatamike203 05-30-2011 03:44 PM

Once you see the pics of how i did it, then you will be like ohhhh. lol

I eliminated the mounting wings and made a plate going over the top of the diff and pit bolts into the diff.

Cookiesoup 06-09-2011 09:59 AM

wow i wouldn't have thought it would break there
